    Yes Sixter fiver, it is a great bike! What I meant was is in our world of old bicycles, it's fairly common, and by my standards not that old. Heck, it was made the year I was born, and I don't feel old.

    Thanks for the advice on the levers, which part of it is the self adjusting mechanism? Is it just the spring and gear?

    There is a spring clip and a little tab that goes into the lever... after removing the brake cables undo the spring and pull the adjuster off ... you may need to use a small punch to tap the tab out of the brake lever and they can be jammed in there quite tightly.

    Running the bike with brakes that are conventional will improve things a good deal.

    I think it is a BSA too. The lugs are odd, but the crown and dropouts indicate 1950s BSA. If that were the case though it should have BSA stamped into the bottom of the bottom bracket though.

    Thought I would post some pics of a 1970 Hercules that I bought last month. Disassembled, polished, relubed, and put some new tires on it. The AW hub wasn't healthy so I tore it apart and ended up replacing some pawls and springs.








    Hmm, something's not quite English, though.

    Feels like spring is here and have been doing a fair amount of pootling around on the Twenty which likes puddles... have been off the bike for almost two weeks and was not riding much before that to let my ankle heal up so it actually felt like work.

    I just did a women's version of the 73 Sport for my sister.....I had not realized how lovely the colour was until I got one.....yours is just glowing!

    (Are those alloy rims? If not, how are the koolstops on the steel rims?)

    I use the Kool Stops on my steel rims and they are almost too good, they pointed out the fact that there is a bad bump in the rim and cause pulsating when braking, now I am going to upgrade to alloy to get smoother braking

    Thanks, yes Aaron is right, they stop in a dime, even in wet wether. Now, my rims are original, and the sidewalls are "machined" and have a great braking surface. I've seen many Raleigh 3 speeds with a smooth sidewall, and this is where I believe most people are dealing with poor braking. Mine even stopped just fine with the original brake pads, they were pretty dry though so I changed them to the kool stops.

    Looks like the bike cleaned up VERY nicely atmo! I have DF and STF 73's that I only hope clean up half as nicely as yours did. Are the tires Kenda K40-HP's? If they are, I like them quite a bit and have a pair on my 1956 Hercules Royal Prince. The K40-HP's allow you to pump up to 90 PSI which can be useful at times.

    Hey cobrabyte, she's a nice looking creature indeed! I can see why you like it as much as you do. The brown on those bikes adds a richness to them that some of the other colors didn't quite attain atmo.

    Thanks photogravity! Yes, i too love the tone of the brown paint. I had another Sports in the same color, but too small for me (has been sold), who's finish had dulled over the years, this gave it a nice character too. My current Sports must have lived indoors for many years because the finish just shines like new, especially with a thin coat of wax

    I have also always liked the grey color option as well: (not my bike, but stunning)

    Thanks and good eye - the tires are Kenda K40-HPs. They mounted easily and look pretty good. I kinda wish the sidewalls were a bit less yellow, though.

    Nice score on the Royal Prince, BTW

    I have Kool Stops on my Rudge. In dry weather, they are excellent. I couldn't ask for better brakes. I have the original steel rims.

    In wet weather, they work adequately AFTER I dry them, and I dry them by pre-braking, so to speak. But all of this means it's not really good for emergency stops. If it were my primary bike, I'd change the rims.

    Has anyone dealt with these guys?

    Here's a couple of three speeds that are getting a new lease on life. The mens model is marked '74 on the hub and the womens is marked '77.

    I may be looking to get rid of the womens' model if anyone is interested.

    I recently picked up this 1966 Raleigh RSW. I’m not sure what to do with it. I figure it'll make a great bike to loan out to visitors for short rides downtown, etc. I'd like to ride it too, which may be a tall order. So far, I’ve made a couple of changes to try to get it to accommodate my freakish 6’6” frame. I added a longer seatpost and modified the handlebars to bring them up several inches. But it still seems a bit small.

    That looks great! And the original carryall on the back, that's true unobtanium. My wife has one of those, the deluxe model with dynohub and the headlight built into the front fender, very cool. At 6' I can ride it well enough, but the cockpit is short.
