    Really freaky, the other week a complete bike in red(?) sold; Raleigh, Humber forks, twin top tube...I thought it is was a frankenbike with a repaint...guess not huh?

    If you check this guys auctions, you see he has the correct rod brake holders/mounts for the bifurcated forks. I'm thinking this guy disassembles everything and sells if off piecemeal.

    I can only imagine that some manager at Raleigh must have decided to build some parts bin bikes with some 1950's Humber forks. I would love to have some of those.

    DL-1 for my Bride.

    Found in Atlanta area, November 2012. Given as Christmas present December 2012. Brought home a few days ago. [rain in late December in Atlanta]

    Haven't been here for a while, but today I started the refurb of the old 1958 Superbe Dawn Tourist I found outside an old barn last year.
    I managed to get together everything I needed, and was about to build a new rear wheel when I had a thought!
    Sacrilege you'll say, but here goes.
    I'm instead going to build it into a lightweight sports tourist type bike, so; the rod brakes are going, the Westwood rims are being changed for Endricks, then it's cable operated side pulls, inverted black North road bars and a sporty Brooks.
    The dyno hub will be exchanged for an AW
    The mudguards stay, but the chain guard goes.
    Right now I'm trying to see if anyone can coat brakes and levers black like the old machines.

    Looks sweet to me.

    I wanted to do something about the crank- I was wanting a smaller front sprocket. I had (what has turned out to be) a very rare Nervar Sport cottered crank for the deal. Although it is steel, it has 128mm BCD for the alloy chainwheels. So I've got a 40 on it. We'll see how that goes with my wimpy legs.

    FREE to a good home: Original Dunlop 28 x 1 1/2 tire (ca 1966)

    I had a tire fail on my Raleigh DL-1 Tourist and bought a pair of Schwalbe Delta Cruisers for the bike. That leaves one of the original Dunlop 28 x 1 1/2 tires that I'm not using. If you're interested, PM me.

    Pretty sweet looking... am not sure when those Humber forks vanished from the market but are cool enough that they warrant replication.

    I figure there should be some kind of prize for making what was the 4000 th post in this thread but what could I send you that you don't already have ?

    Maybe a just an attaboy would do ?

    Bought a Sports frame at the Indiana swap meet today. No wheels, fenders, just a frame, BB, crank, pedals, fork, headset, stem and handlebars - all the oddly threaded parts, in other words.
    All the decals are long since faded away, as is the paint on the head badge (which was still there!).
    The serial number is 5 digits at the top of the seat tube with AK under it, which sounds at first like a 1960's frame, but ...
    It has a BB oiler, chaincase braze on, and the simpler lugs ... So now I'm thinking earlier.
    (from the headbadge.com: convention 2: 1948 .....AJ through .....AP (?))

    I have an early 50's AW that isn't laced to anything yet, and that'll have to be close enough. Fortunately I also have an older Raleigh front hub (with R nuts) that should work too. It needs a cover for the oil hole though...
    I'm excited. Does it show?

    I don't think it's going to come out so well. The Dawn Tourist has all kinds of brazed on mounts for the brakes, no? And handlebars made for rod brakes? None of this can be changed elegantly.

    A1958 Dawn Tourist is pretty desirable as is. Sell it and get a plain old Sports or the like. That will be much better suited to what you want to do.



    The bars in the picture you like are not, I think, northroad bars.

    I am still frustrated in my lack of skill to name or date this one. I've tried to show the color, now complete chaincase, evidence of mud flap on front fender, and lack of white tail at rear. The serial # is 681325 T, the wheels are stainless 1 x 3/8, and the hub has only a "1" visible. There is a fork lock, but no key. It has a hefty "cafe" lock at the rear and I do have the keys for it. Shifter has been replaced, so no clue there. Everything, including the seat post has a Raleigh stamp in evidence. None of the nuts show the red "R" seen on my Sports.

    Sadly, my husband has no interest in keeping this. I could salvage the wheels, rack, and lock to use on one of my Sports and simply pass along the frame. I have only $75 invested so far.

    Thoughts?

    Sturmey Archer SC

    Salutations! ok, first of all please forgive me if this post is out of place. I have spent the better part of this morning trying to figure out where to put this query. I was given a Hercules a while back, and was told that it is an english bike which is why I am here. Anyhoo, this bike is a single speed coaster brake ( Sturmey Archer SC 1969). All was well until I started to overhaul the hub. The brake cone assembly HSH 457 and the hub shell HSH 463 (part numbers from Sheldon Brown) have very bad pitting in them, and I don't believe are salvagable. I can find no one who can get parts or even a replacement hub. Being an english bike, I would like to keep it english, but don't want any cables to mess with the lines of this build, and don't like the noise of the new 2 speeds. Anyone have any ideas where I might be able to find parts or a replacement hub? I have also been told that a SC-1 would also work if I could find one. Thanks in advance!

    Maybe Kurt or some expert can improve upon this, but with that color, rod brakes and T-suffixed S/N, my guess is that it is a c. 1955 Superbe Tourist given the serial charts at the Headbadge - though the year can only be approximate due to the spotty data in that upper range.

    Really a very desirable bike - especially in that size.

    Super! If I decide to pass it on, less my saved bits, it will go to someone here with the hopes it will not be flipped.

    Please know that I have spent time reading here and researching other sites. I'm not seeking to profit from any of this information. I found the missing chaincase piece on UK eBay. I've already purchase some Conti City Rides ( and/or Delta Creams) for it. I had great hopes to celebrate it at my home. Surely, some of you appreciate my sentiment.

    I think there would be interest here in a full chaincase Raleigh here - If you so sell it, I would suggest posting it in the For Sale thread, but you need to subscribe to BFs to do that- It's WELL WORTH the $12 or whatever- plus you get rid of those pesky ads.

    A few clues point to 1940s to early 50s, particularly the pedals and the brazed-on cable pulley boss. That rear hub date is a bit mystifying, but it isn't unknown for date codes to be stamped lightly or to rub off over time. Does just about every chromed part have "Raleigh Industries" stamped on it?

    All chromed parts are stamped. In fact, everything seems to be branded.

    I seek no profit from any of this. I commute on old 3 speeds. A gentleman, seeing my ride, commented that he had one in his garage. Before I could contain myself I asked if he'd like to sell it. The rest is history.
