Thank you!
I picked up yet another Eatons Glider (1962) on the w/e from a neighbour for $40.00.
It had some very nice parts which have already been harvested and moved over to the Norman.
A near perfect trigger and better brake levers. It also had a pair of pump brackets.
I have a question about the frame and will post some photos later.....

Since someone already changed the stem/bar and seat, taking parts off this one does not seem so bad but it would be nice to see it restored.

This, the greatest thread on Bikeforums, has made it page 333. Just sayin

I agree!!!

Ooh, that rhymes. A contemplative 3-speed poem in the works? Writing poems while on a 3-speed ride through the countryside.

3speedslow 10-12-15 06:12 PM

Dare I say, Shimano 333.

BigChief 10-12-15 07:21 PM

+1 on fixing up the Glider. That's a nice one. Depending on how tall you are, those riser stems can be good things on a 21" Sports. The missing seat wouldn't bother me much either. A Brooks or a Persons is a whole lot nicer than those original Mattress saddles.

Three speeds up
and three speeds down.
You move me swiftly,
through the town.
Always ready.
Always able.
I trust,, in you,
my braided cable.

Absolute gold!
Too bad I don't live back in the home country anymore, we could meander the Don Valley on our Superbes, in our very best tweeds, serenading young maidens.

I think I got something in my eye...

I know this is the 'English' 3 speed thread, but I still thought it was worth mentioning

I'm already working on it....

I do have a question about the frame...
The serial number on the top of the seat tube reads
51943
N
TE
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=482313
The front fork has a bracket for a headlight.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=482315
And there's also a small threaded mount behind the chain ring..
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=482316
It makes me think that this frame was originally intended for something other than a Department Store Bike....

I've never seen those mounts on a Glider, or any Raleigh bike before. My guess would be that the lug on the right fork leg would be for a bottle generator.
The decorative fork cap is different too. Usually they are plain. Looks like a higher end model. Really nice bike. The threaded lug on the chainstay is a mystery to me. A cable pulley mount?
edit: 40 bucks is a whale of a deal. You've had more than your share of luck lately.

Re: Serial #
N = Nottingham
TE = Timothy Eaton?

I have another Glider in the garage that I'll check out.

I have the same threaded lug on my Dunelt 1969, I use it to mount a fully enclosed chaincase.

SandyR 10-13-15 11:10 AM

I have a Glider which has none of the additional mounts. The fork caps are plain chrome, nothing fancy. The serial number is stamped into the lug just forward of where yours is. The last 4 digits are 3564. It appears there are possibly 3 other digits before those which I can't read. It came with a chrome front fender . The AW hub shows 1976 as the year but I don't know if it is original.

Ahhh, that's it. A fully enclosed chaincase. I've never owned one and didn't know how they were mounted. This seems to be a rather special Glider.

The full chaincase is a new plastic one from Hesling Original full chainguard / chaincase

That green glider would look stunning going down the road. Wish I had neighbors that had bikes to unload.

looking forward to the progress pics.

Thank you all for the kind words and encouragement.
The Glider will be going to a new home down the road, preferably a former student or friend and as such
I want to keep the cost down.I enjoy the time spent working on the bikes so sell at cost to deserving college students.
I think I can keep the costs on this one to about $75.00 (or less) CDN.
It's already supplied several nice parts to other projects that will be replaced with good parts.
Here's the trigger that's now attached to my Norman.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=482412
I've decided to replace the old style calipers with something slightly newer.
It's too difficult to find the Raleigh cables for these.

That being said, does anyone want these for a period correct restoration? Free, just postage. Preferably someone in Canada but could ship south.

3speedslow 10-13-15 04:53 PM

I'm crying, really. Just what I would like to put on my project.

@gster: the earlier you go the higher the quality a "department store" bike might be, especially from Eatons...I think you said this one was a 64? My glider is a 71/72 or so, and has the s/n stamped (poorly) like @SandyR has.

The green one's from 1962 and I have another that's a 1964 as well.

The Eaton's Glider is a Raleigh Sports in a different suit, their quality is identical to their British cousin.

There were great numbers of them sold here in Canuckistan so they are still relatively easy to find and often come to us in beautiful condition, like other raleigh sub brabds they tend to come in brighter colours.

BigChief 10-14-15 05:52 AM

Gliders are also common here in the border states. Families, along with their possessions tend to straddle the line. Research into this rare model might well run into a dead end, but if it were mine, I'd give it a try. This is no ordinary Glider/Sports. It would make a great project if the original specs were known.
