I've never seen a bad Rockhopper. All were race-quality.
Your serial# has nothing in common with the format of my '86 Rockhopper.
Photo's needed.

Closest I can come up with is 1985 Stumpjumper Sport.

The shifters are identical to my 86 Rockhopper. It's Red though.
Fork is different with that "lug" on top. makes me think possibly an earlier Stumpjumper?
Crank looks the same. Mine was 26-36-46.
Rear wheel/hub doesn't look stock for that era.
Fork looks like an 85 Stumpjumper-

Still learning
Has the OP bothered to look for the date code on the back of the crankset? I am rebuilding a 1993 TREK 950; the date code 9 and a 3 in circles are as plain as day on the back of the Deore LX triple.

Also different seatclusters.
Stumpy and Stumpy Team have fastback style, whereas the Stumpy Sport has capped seatstays on the sides of the seattube.

I pulled the bottom bracket out of my '85 and there is a small amount of wear of bearing race on one side of the spindle. The BB is a 68x120 that is stamped on the spindle. Apparently, this isn't a common size now. I thought I would replace BB with a sealed bearing unit but it looks like 118 and 122 lengths are more common. Any recommendation on one to use? Thanks,

My old '85 Rockhopper is back on the road again. I pulled the fork to clean and regrease, replaced spindle in bottom bracket and packed bearings, disassembled and cleaned the brakes, shifters, and then cleaned up the derailleurs. I had hubs laced up with new rims from Alex Rims and I installed a NOS Shimano freewheel.
Bike rides very smoothly and is very quiet w/o any squeaks, creaks, or rattles.

Little late but just saw your post. Specialized serials are not informational. They are random unique codes intended to be used as identifiers, as with insurance or police in case of theft or damage. They contain no information. As someone else said later in response to you, check your derailleurs and cross that with the info on bikepedia. Also, Specialized had a habit of switching between groups mid year based on inventory so the date code on the stuff is paramount since something bikepedia lists as using shimano may have still been given suntour as a one off.
