Shimano...ARGGHHHH!

It's bad enough I have to figure out how to mount cable stops on their weird keyed bosses. But now I have to find two 4.5MM bolts. Not an M4. Not an M5 but a 4.5. I actually went to a nut & bolt warehouse today and the guys there told me they were really hard to find. I guess I'll just try to tap the hole to a 5, or cut 'em off and make it a fixie

jw,

For stops use the typical Shimano's and Dremel/file a slot to fit over the keyed boss.

Tapping a hole isn't that hard, especially when you're only talking 1/2 mm. I'm surprised that the nut and bolt guys can't order it. Just think though, you could be dealing with Raleigh threading. now THAT is a PITA!

this might a bit pricy for two screws, but atleast they have them

*Shimano A105FS Downtube Shifters, Braze on /Set Price: $24.95 USD
Item #SH-SLA105: These non index shifters don't fit square based bosses, only round bosses with keys (sometimes called Italian bosses); set does not include cables or cable casings. Also comes with 4.5mm screws instead of the 5mm screws which work with square based bosses. ONLY for non indexing systems. Absolutely NEW old stock!

sorry I can't get the pic to copy

it may have been. I could be wrong (I am not machinist) but I think you need two taps for this job. one that will ream the hole bigger and recut the threads and a bottom tap to clean the threads to the bottom afterwards.

If you still have the old shifters just use the bolts that came with them to mount the cable stops.

mickey-you're right on that one. I've only read about the Raleigh threading. Never actually come across it. BianchiGirl, I saw those shifters while searching for a solution last night. But I already had the d-ring 4.5 bolts. They were just too short. I bit the bullet and picked up a metric tap and die set tonight. Seemed like overkill for 5 minutes worth of work but the next best thing to a new bike is new tools so I am a happy camper right now.

Just for kicks I mounted some 7-speed index DT shifters directly to the bosses w/o the keyed washers and damn if they didn't fit! I'm thinking about sticking with the dt shifters for now and moving to barends later.
