How do you upshift this BRIFTER?
My girlfriend got this Terry bike from about 89-90 and it has a Shimano 600 brake lever/shifter. I've never used one. So we were checkin it out and shifted it to the lowest gear. Then we were all like... k now what?

The little paddle (on the inside) loosens the cable and drops the chain on the back to the smallest cog, by swinging it inward towards the stem.
The big lever/paddle (that is also the brake lever), pulls the cable and climbs the chain on the back to the largest cog, by swinging it in wards towards the stem. You'll notice the little one goes with it when you move it. It's supposed to.
I think you can Google "shifting Shimano STI" and find instructions. Don't feel bad. After being off of bikes for the duration of the change from DT shifters to STI's, I got a bike with STI's and ended up taking it to a bike shop for advice on the same thing. When she got done laughing, she showed me how.

You might also want to flush the shifter mechanism out with WD40. The brifters (brakes and shifters combined) tend to gum up from time to time and this flushing will work wonders.

Thanks
Thanks. That's the only thing I could think of, using the big one vs. the small one. But it wouldn't shift up. Guess it's WD40 time.

Shimano, yes, Campy, no. Campagnolo shifters seem to be free of this feature.

This was exactly my situation (Shimano 600s). I followed the WD-40 advice and it fixed the problem.
