My first classic - 1990 Trek 1200
Picked up a 1990 Trek 1200 last night. Hosed myself by admitting I was going to put gears on it in talking with the seller. The seller showed up with his Singleator removed. He wouldn't sell at my price with it, and I didn't want to pay extra for it as I was only going to sell it to make up part of the price once I put gears on the bike.
I'm upgrading my wife's technium and moving her Shimano 105 shifters and derailleurs on to the Trek 1200.
For those perusing 1200s in the future. I paid $150 for it. It had the original everything except the stuff removed to make it a single speed. It did have Shimano SPD pedals and very new speedez fenders. Those two addons were pretty big for me. Not a great deal, but good enough. Better than the person wanting $300 for a 86 Centurion which was the only bike I've seen on CL around here in my size lately.

1990 is a classic?
Guess I'm a C&V member, then.
Just picked up an '86 to go along with my '89. My commuter is a 92 or 93.

150$ isn't too bad if some or most of the components can be salvaged. The 1200 frame is nice. It's not exactly vintage but in terms of aluminum frames it's pretty vintage. The old treks road great. I had a three tubed carbon bike and it was nice...I was too affraid of it exploding so I sold it off. I wish I didn't. The frame fit great.

I would say C&V, both by years and stage of development. The Trek 1000 series fall into the same category as the earlier Cannondales -- among the first production aluminum road frames, overbuilt and bullet proof.
My son rides a 1200 upgraded to 9-speed SIS as his stealth campus bike.

Riding like its 1990
1990 is 20 years old now, first among the line of aluminum bikes and it certainly looks better than most aluminum's now with their fat blobs of welding lines.
I have a 90 1400 that I geve back to my brother - 7 speed DT 105 components... nice.

Any pics? I picked up a 94 model from the thrift store last Summer for $10. I think it rides like a steel bike.

Then the original "everything" would be the frame, the seatpost, the saddle, the stem, the handlebars. Not much originality left there... Are the bosses and braze-ons intact?

Well, since it's SS it probably has the original brake calipers and levers. It may still have the original crank and wheels too, maybe it was a ghetto SS and still has the freewheel or cassette. I have a 1990 Aluminum Trek and I love it. It is my go to for local club rides.
