Superbe Pro replacement hoods

I have a set of late Superbe Pro levers with gums that are toast. Do I have to look for NOS replacements or are there other ones I could use?

Cheers

According to Kurt in 2008...

Charles is right - these use Campagnolo-pattern hoods.

Any of the replacement Campag NR hoods would fit, in addition to Campag-pattern A'ME hoods and Suntour Gran Compe non-aero.

Wait right there - that information was given for first-gen Superbe.

The final generation of Superbe Pro levers look like this:

Even then, we don't know if these are the "late" levers the OP is referencing; I believe at least three styles existed. Regardless, if they are indeed the last-gen levers, I haven't the foggiest where one can get hoods for them, or if any alternate lever hoods fit them.

-Kurt

P.S.: Send me a link to that thread so I can edit it before the newbies misinterpret it as irrevocable truth for the entirety of Superbe's existence.

Kurt, I googled "Suntour Superbe Hoods" and got the archive link to this thread from 2008:
https://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in.../t-463460.html

Three different versions?! My gosh. That's a lot to keep track of.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, beautiful Terraferma!

YIKES! Don't say that. With (semi) vintage parts there always seems to be an alternative!

Thanks - revised the original post.

You don't want to delve into the world of Mafac brake levers.

Thank you - like to buy it? Mike's selling

I've been staring at the levers for a while; nothing has come to mind.

Yet.

Since the old Superbes' were probably made by Dia Compe, there's a chance that these may be compatible with Dia Compe hoods. I'll compare the Superbe hoods with the Dia Compe ones I have to see.

This is my theory:
Superbe levers look like Sprint levers (even the molding lines are similar). There was an eBay auction where the seller was able to use Dia Compe Aero hoods on Sprint levers very well.
Exhibit #1 (Superbe levers): https://velobase.com/ViewSingleCompon...b73ab&Enum=118
Exhibit #2 (Sprint levers): https://velobase.com/ViewSingleCompon...24512&Enum=118
Exhibit #3 (eBay auction): https://cgi.ebay.com/SUNTOUR-SPRINT-B...#ht_500wt_1182

So, if my theory holds true you can use Dia Compe Aero hoods or the AME/Modolo equivalents. Luckily, there are hoods on eBay:
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...T#ht_500wt_956

Again, this is only a theory.

Don't count on it. Between the New Grand Compe Aero's and the half-a-million-other-variants produced for the bottom-enders, finding a decent fit will be quite difficult.

Oddly enough, these look as if they might work: https://cgi.ebay.com/Suntour-Bicycle-...item4cedf2b165 - I'd recommend them to the OP. The price is right.

They should. They are Suntour Sprints.

On a side note, the Dia Compe aero hoods are quite comfortable and I hear the Modolo anatomic are even more comfortable if the original Superbe hoods aren't sufficient.

However, I'm definitely not convinced about the Dia-Compe Aero hoods (fourth link you gave). The Dia-Compe Aero Grand Compe 250 hoods have a dip in the hood to hide the lever pivot (see below - example is wearing AM'E versions of said hood). The seller layered the hoods on top of each other in such a way that you can't tell either way. I'd want to know before I'd buy those for a pair of Superbe Pros.

The AGC251 hoods should fit the Superbe.

These don't have the extra rubber as the AGC250:

And the eBay link is for the AGC251 hoods as the AGC250 don't have the nice anatomical molding.

By the way, that's a pretty Raleigh you got there.

I got a set of Superbe Pro levers recently. They had Shimano DA aero hoods on them and they fit pretty well. Only problem is those are hard to find also.

I think this is the set I bought last year. They work but are a very tight fit getting them on. Had to use soapy water but they fit.

Thanks for the heads up. For that price, I bought them and will try them out.

Those hoods are for aero levers. Did Suntour Superbe levers come in aero? All mine are routed out the top.

Oh man this thread is killing me.

I've got a bike that came stock with Suntour Superbe Pro bits, only the levers weren't Superbe Pro levers (for whatever reason) but rather Dia-Compe levers.

I've been looking for a set of Superbe Pro brake levers forever. I forgot to log in and bid on the last set I saw on eBay. They sold for less than $30 so I was crushed.

Anybody that can't live with their Suntour Superbe Pro levers since they won't have authentic Superbe Pro rubber PM me. I'll happily take 'em off your hands.

Well I sourced my levers, years later. Did anyone ever figure out which hoods to use for Superbe Pro levers? Velo Orange makes these but I think these are for the early Superbe & Campy stuff, not Superbe Pro:
