Looks great! I'd love to have one in that color. Tell us about the leather cord on the hoods - how does that feel/work?

The leather cord did not work out like I wanted...I am going to remove it for now...I think I will wrap the bare brake levers in place of going over hoods...feels pretty good, but does not look too hot...

Between my copper one and Chip Lucky's red one...you see the variability and long term standing of the Super Course model!

I came across this thread when I found a super course frame on craigslist last fall. Used everyone's posts for inspiration, so thought I'd share. After spending the winter re-cabling, overhauling hubs, etc this is now my commuting bike.

^ Yup, very cool.

I have to admit, I sometimes envy you folks who can commute on a singlespeed/fixie.

And other times, I pity you.

I live in the city, so singlespeed is enough, leave the gears for the weekends. Plus, the derailleurs were seized up when I got the bike, so this was a quicker way to get it on the road.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments - this has been a great project and may have started a habit.

update on 1973 SC: Added new Brooks saddle and tape, new brown cables, found and cleaned up vintage Pletscher rack. Planning on keeping it pretty much original. Really enjoy the bike!

So.....bringing up an old, unresolved topic....the 'funky' green that was used on the SC. I've been told that Deco Art in the UK makes these colors identical to the Raleigh original. They have licensed Deco Art Paint for America as well...sold at Joann's Fabric for one. On the Deco Art US color chart, 'antique green' looks like maybe a dead ringer for the 'funky' green touch up....anyone try this?

I'm going to check this out. Not for touchups (my SC is too far gone for that) but I'm toying with the idea of painting one of my rear racks green to go with it. I just googled the color chart, it's always a little hard to compare real life to computer screen color, but it looks pretty close. An acrylic paint, though. Not sure if that would work very well long term.

Yeah, it is acrylic. Maybe with some clear over it, it would last...dunno...paint and body work are not my strong suit. I'm trying to preserve the original finish on my SC and with a correct paint code, maybe I can get a rattle can made with the appropriate color. I do remember somebody on some forum using the term 'antique green' and so I perked up when I found this. They were talking about color matching in the yahoo group;TI Raleigh SBDU Racing Bikes. This company came up as an exact match for a particular blue they used from the Carlton factory. UK Deco Art had the exact match and paint code. That's the most OCD group of guys I ever saw...so when they speak of something favorable to Raleigh OE, I listen. Of course they weren't talking about the 'funky' green or anything as 'lowly' as a SC.

I also found the best decals to match, but again with a guy over in the UK....don't know if it's worth the effort, cost and postage for an SC.

I know that the OE 'funky' green had some yellow/gold in it and if you look at the color chart from America Deco Art acrylic, gold is right before the transition into 'antique green'. Sure looks close to me, that's why I asked if someone had some real life experience with it.

Kevin

The green on my '73 looks an awful lot like the Verdoro Green used on the '68-69 (Pontiac) GTO. Might be worth checking out.

You're telling me! I've got 5 bicycles in the garage now. So as long as I keep riding each day, I'll always have some sort of project to work on. Here's my "new" '84 Super Course, a stock, low mileage unit I found in Simi Valley. It had all the original parts on it, right down to the 2-piece brake cables. I've since replaced those cables, the brake hoods, seat, front and rear derailleurs . . . and I guess that's it. All original parts are stored in a box.

The plastic spacer on the downtube RD shifter is cracked, one reason for posting here; I need to source a replacement.

A link to how I found the bike - and its true condition - is found here. I posted it before I learned of this thread:

Oh yeah, that was Shimano's wonderful "You're going to use ONLY our shifter until the end of time." era. Thankfully it was short lived, but there are some pretty nice bikes afflicted with those horrible proprietary shifter bases. You can always use barcons or Shimano bar end shifters, and cut a notch out of some DT cable adjusters with a dremel. I have that on my 85 Schwinn Super Sport, and am using notched DT adjusters with Sante' shifters converted to bar ends.

And to think my ex boss at the bike shop offered me $200 for this piece of junk.

farmroast, that's a very nice specimen! What kind of handlebar tape is that? Is it leather? I just discovered leather tape and wish I had tried it long ago.

It's the Brooks leather tape. Went with the darker brown but the color didn't show quite right. The lighter honey color I'd heard gets a bit funky looking with age. The bike is a '73. Was also thinking of painting the rack too as was mentioned but decided to just Mothers it back to a clean shine. Will go with the Panaracer tires as have been suggested here for a nicer traditional look once the Continentals that were on the bike wear out.
Thanks to all for this thread. A super course had been my teenage dream in the early '70s and this thread convinced me to find one. Very happy with the bike. Since added a Avenir Excursion rack top expandable trunk bag.
