It's tempting to make a commuter bike out of a high end steel frame. Maybe I will, but I think I'll need an extra injection of insanity first.

Sheldon already did a Raleigh Competition with gold-anodized everything.

As soon as the judges are finished the builders can come forward. Thanks for the nice words guys, the past two days were a little chaotic. I would have done a couple things differently given the chance. I would have asked that all the stories were provided in plain text, you can see some asterisks where there were translation issues. The other thing that I would change, I would have created a standard template for cost accounting. That way it would be much easier to read and compare.

Still, even with some problems I think we took a step in the right direction this year.

For me number 2 is the winner. Of course I have no official right to judge them, but in my brain it is the best.

But there are many good entries and I commend all of you for your hard work.

Kurt, do you mean this one?

Or this one?

I personally see the value in taking an old racing frame and giving it a new and dignified life. But, perhaps I am in the minority.

I am sure it's a typo... nobody in his right mind would spend that much on a vintage nos French porteur chain guard.

I haven't really expressed an opinion I guess, but at the same time I am not a judge... I have multiple favorites but number 2 is one of the standouts to me too.

Can we get a picture of the grand prize trophy? I am not sure who is responsible for making it, but they went WAY WAY above and beyond.

Oh, for sure, I wouldn't be the first to build a commuter with a high end steel frame. I just want to have one, not to create something new.

It's explicitly stated in the rules that trash or dump finds are free:

If you found it (that means no one gave it to you) discarded somewhere, it's yours to use free of penalty."

Yes, trading said parts adds a layer of complication, but I think it still may be in the spirit of thriftiness. It's possible shipping costs should be accounted for, if incurred. However, I'll need to communicate with the other judges about this.

I think if bike #5 mated with bike #8, their offspring would look like bike #2. Number 2 is just so cute and adorable. Although I dont think #5 knew how high maintenance #8 was going to be.

Haha, after reading through the lists I would bet Niagara Cycle works and Velo-Orange like when we do these contests. I realize that the order amounts for the contest are small, but maybe someone decided to stock up while their at it.

This contest is such a great concept. If I have my act together I will need to enter next year. Almost any bike of mine could have been entered.

My bike will be raffled off to raise money for friends of mine to go to Haiti to work in an orphanage.
Sort of unrelated but without this contest I would not have had a reason to build a bike and would not have had it completed in time.
Just saying that this was great motivation.

I sure like the "velo-un-cheapo" randonneur though. Makes me want to buy knickers.

Entry 14 is simply stunning.

It looks like the average prices range from 100 to 180 ish bux....take a look over at Target or WalMarts site and just see what you can get for that money....these are some way cooler bikes than you could buy for that money.

Well, I have to give a big thumbs up to Velo-Cheapo entree #8 for his/her sense of humor. Even after $1500, the wheels are borrowed! You're planning to give 'em back?

I'm a bit puzzled by the lack of anonymity... I mean, at least a couple of the bikes seem to have the builder's name written all over them... but I guess that's all the fun of it, right?
