Sugino Cranks, AT and VP

I have been looking around for triple cranks, and I have noticed that those Sugino AT cranks seem to be really pricey. The last two I watched went for nearly $100 on ebay.

I wonder why?

I happen to have a set of the Sugino VP cranks. Those seem to be, by comparison very cheap. Again, my question is why?

They don't seem to be very different. The AT seems to have a better finish, but it also seems like you buff up the VP cranks and it would be just fine.

I searched to see if I could find some sort of run down on all the older Sugino Crank models, but I didn't find anything.

If I understand correctly, they were standard equipment on many touring bikes in the 80s, and were good for loaded touring. I had a Trek 614 sports tourer that came with an AT triple crankset with chainrings in a 'half-step plus granny' configuration.

By comparison, the VPs were common lower-end cranks used on more affordable road bikes.

That makes some sense, but other than finish (and stock gearing), is there really any difference between a "high end" AT and a "low end" VP?

They really look similar otherwise. And want to take a buffer to a set of VP cranks from a ten dollar mountain bike and see how they look in the end.
