Raleigh Touring Question: Grand Prix vs. Wyoming
Hey all,
I was wondering the big difference between the two bikes for their use as touring bikes. I've scoped out both on Sheldon's site and realize that the Wyoming is meant for touring whereas the Grand Prix more for racing. Now, I am not planning on riding across country on either. I was just wondering is there really a huge difference in the bikes for grocery trips or weekend camping trips during the summer up and down the west shore of Lake Michigan.
What is there to consider between these two bikes?
Thanks!
-Alex

How far are planning on going up and down the west shore of Lake Michigan? Also, I am not familiar with the Wyoming. Pictures!

The gran prix W/it's shorter stays will give you a much better chance of getting heel strike if you run panniers and will also have stock higher gearing which you won't like on hills. Not to mention a bit stiffer ride, but quicker steering. That said, I've ridden MS 150's on my '84 grand prix, but not carrying anything but a trunk bag with a few items in it.

Depends on the year. Early Grand Prix (1970s) were really bottom end, steel wheels, high ten steel frame, cottered cranks, etc. Basically a P*O*S. Find for neighborhood riding, but that would be about it. Raleigh slowly improved it. By 1985, it was a decent bike. The Wyoming was their bottom end touring bike, similar to the later years Grand Prix, much better than the earlier years Grand Prix.
Assuming they both fit and are in similar condition, the Wyoming frame and gearing is more favorable for touring, not great, as it just has a double, no cantilever brakes, its kind of a sorta touring bike.
While I used to ride centuries on my 1971 Schwinn Continental (a Schwinn P*O*S), I was a kid, and the terrain was flat (Illinois). I certainly would not recommend doing it. If you are going to carry anything, the Wyoming is the better choice of the two.
Again, what year Grand Prix and are they both the same size and do they fit??
