Moto Grand Record, mockup begins.

I found this bike over a year ago now I believe. It was a basket case missing the original fork, 105 brakes. light action derailleurs. It was all over the place in both
brand and era. Early on I completed the campy group, although I am in need of a seatpost. I polished up a VERY nice Pivo stem 6-8 months ago, but it has flown away. I cannot locate it for the life of me, a shame since it shone like it probably never did new. I have not decided on brakes yet. A set of Racers would definitely look choice, or I could go with Weinmann centerpulls, any opinion on that? Painting... I'm kind of shying away from a complete repaint, but it does have it's share of problems. The paint seems to be clearcoated somehow, and it is clouded up. On damp mornings, it looks just plain BAD. Cranks I believe are original, any comments on that? They're Nervar Star. The BB seems gummy but usable. A closer inspection is definitely necessary. If it's toast then it's Grand Cru time. I may do that anyway. I'm sick of looking at this thing hanging in the garage collecting dust. I want to RIDE it, hehe. Preferably with leather wrap and those stainless fenders I spirited from a Gazelle.,,,,BD

Funny notes.. I originally bought the Swift FOR this bike. It's been on every bike except this one for about three years now. Hey at least it's almost broken in now. The wheels are the ones from my old custom orange SS I sold. I told him if he ever changed the wheels, I would buy them back. A couple of weeks later I get an email. I got these wheels on a ten dollar Raleigh of unknown model name. Normandy hubs, Weinmann texture sided rims, and relaced with DT/DB spokes. They were worth 10 times the purchase price of the whole bike, to me.

Oh well, sorry for the long winded thinking out loud post.

Should the seatpost be Campy, or Simplex?

Just a hairline crack, hehe. Campy post was original for this bike then? I have that post on my 510, but I dunno which bike desrves it more.
I am also shocked by the lightness of this bike, even with no chain, brakes, and a Brooks steel railed saddle. Like a feather!,,,,BD

I'm not sure what would have been original, but I do know what is more reliable. Granted, the Simplex post will probably weigh nothing, but I wouldn't use one with alloy rails, that's for sure.

Did they come in 26.4? Sheldon's database seems to think all of the GR's were that size. Hmm, I wonder what size the simplex is
on my PX-10. Probably 27.2, with my luck...,,,,BD

The price of those early Campy posts, wow.... I pretty much bought a seat post, and got the rest of my Trek 510 free....

The PX is 26.6... .2 too large. figures

My Grand Record (which looks very similar to yours) has a 26.4 campy seat post.

Thanks on the Brooks. It's a Swift, and I got it before they seemingly more than doubled in price. I don't understand it at all. Mine was $153 with shipping included,
and now I see them everywhere for over $300. Okay, so I may have to skip the post, unless someone wants to trade me one for a Chorus post in decent condition.,,,,BD

Grand Records had an alloy seatpost with a Brooks clamp. The only Campy components were the derailleurs.

You mean the steel brooks clamp, and not a rail clamping type post?,,,,BD

It's a 26.4 seat tube. I wish that it was 27.2, it would make things a lot simpler, or less complex.,,,,BD

Hi BD -
I think S.S. Fenders would indeed be good on this bike.
Personally I would go with the straight alloy seat post and steel seat clamp for authenticity's sake...(I've been leaning more toward 70's style posts on 70's bikes of late. )
- And my vote is for Weinmann calipers vs Mafacs on this bike - and I would opt for black bar tape, and then look for white hoods for the - the - egad ! Turkey Wings? What are THEY doing there, on this next to top of the line Moto?

Simply a placeholder for the real thing. I don't even know what the bars came off of. Maybe it was the Atala Corsa I gutted a while back. The Pivo stem I
am still searching for in my stash, is identical to this one, only 20mm shorter. This one is a bit long even for my long torso, on this large frame.,,,,BD

The stem is not very visible, but appears to have lugs, and two raised ridges around the bar clamp area. They're beautiful when polished up....

Here's the CL pic, that made me stop and stare, hehe. I was like could it be, nahhhhh, lol. But it was.

Here's the day I brought it home...

And here's the stem I wish I could find, Agggggh!! lol

Yep, that's where those bars came from, hehe.

Ahhh, it was a first gen Dura Ace front, and an Altus LT rear, with 105 brakes.,,,,BD

I know a guy with a sandblaster. I have a 50 pound bag of glass beads that I can bring. The decals are available, so I might as well.

You'll never see a bike with French metric tubes and a 27.2 seatpost. The seat tube would have to have walls 0.4 mm thick. Simplex made a very nice copy of the Super Record single bolt post right before they folded. I have them on two bikes. One of them is a 26.4. They both came from eBay and were not expensive.
