Someone on the CR list outed this bike last night. I went down this AM, not expecting to see it there...but it was....and for less than the outer had indicated. So I snagged it. I ruined someone's day as a store employee told me she was just talking to someone on the phone who wanted to buy it.

Quick once over shows serial J7264. PAT 72 on RD, no date on the crankset. Cinelli old logo stem and Giro d'Italia bars. Weinmann lever have had the turkey wings removed. Flat skewer on the front wheel, bolt on replacement wheel on the rear. I make it 24 1/2 seat tube CtoC. I am guessing a touring model with the 27 inch wheels and the stem shifters. Hopefully someone will tell me the correct model designation.

1972 P13-9. Not a touring model; would have probably had Campag Record sidepulls and 700C rims.

Mind if I add it to the Registry?

Not at all. Interesting observation on the brakes and rims. Dealer swap, maybe?

It's in.

I don't recall if you could order the redesigned P13 with centerpulls, but the theory behind the redesign didn't intend for their use (though it is, of course, possible). The top tube cable clips were used in place of the braze-ons specifically for the Campagnolo Record sidepulls. You might also note that both front and rear brakes are short reach; P15's and the early P13's required the long-reach 999 750's in the back.

Are the calipers marked "Schwinn Approved" or "Weinmann 999?"

Take care,

-Kurt

Thanks for the info. Front is Schwinn Approved, rear sticker is missing.

Might have been ordered that way. Come to think of it, I would expect it out of someone who ordered their Paramount with Twin-Sticks.

P.S.: Lynn and I were discussing the model differences between the Paramounts via PM. The following might be of interest to those curious as to "what makes it a P13:"

"The lack of top tube braze-ons, fender eyelets, and the gradual fork rake all indicate that your frame is the revised P13 that was released in late '71/1972. Only the revised P13s were set up in this fashion - the earlier P13's, all P15's, and all P10's have top tube clips, fork blades that bend farther down at the bottom of the blade a-la most English machines (the rake was revised a few times after '76), and most of them have eyelets (though exceptions exist)."

I HATE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guess who was on the phone with the girl? I had her measure the seat tube, then go back and make sure it said Paramount on the frame, then I asked her if I could just pay with my credit card and then a friend of mine will come in to pick it up, and she said I will go see how I handle that, she came back a minute later and said I have bad news.....when I got out there a man was rolling it up to pay for it. Ruined my day! Congratulations on probably one of the best deals you will ever get. Think I will go back to my crying towel now! Bet ya I move faster next time!!!!! Hope it works out good for ya. Would like to see a few more pics if you have a chance (nothing like a little salt in my wound) just kidding

My '73 P13-9, serial number K72XXX is bone stock original down to the bar tape and reflectors. It came with Weinmann 'Schwinn Approved' center pulls, top tube cable clips and Mavic Monthlery 'Champion du Monde' tubulars.

Hmm. Have to look at Bob H's catalogs again.

Thanks for the salt! Oh well wasn't really my size, sure could have used some of those parts and gained a nice profit from that frame though. Good luck with it

FYI, the '73 catalog is of little use, with exception to starting countless discussions on BF about wacky slacks and cheesecake.

Pretty sure the centerpulls were "standard" and the Campagnolo brakes were an (expensive) upgrade, even on the P13-9.

The P10 and P15 also have 3/8-inch longer chainstays.
Oh, also, the changes weren't necessarily made all of a piece - you occasionally see "transitional" P13 frames circa 1971 that have some but not all of the changes.

Yep, my mistake. They're not that glaringly obvious in the catalog, you know

Same for the pre-'72 P13's.

True - of course until the "new" P13 was developed, the P13 also had the top tube braze-ons, late-breaking fork, and eyelets - which often catches folks out when it comes to identifying 60's Paramounts.

Not always true. I have the fork off a Feb. '68 Paramount that is sans-eyelets, unmodified.

Well, but nothing to do with Paramounts is "always true." I'm speaking in generalities.

Of course.

On a side note, I sketched this second-gen Paramount chart up in the meantime. It's based mostly on the catalogs, so take it with a grain of salt (and don't hesitate to correct me on anything):
