What exactly do I have and what to do with it?

Hey all,

I'm a RN and at my hospital, I found this old Schwinn in the lost and found. Apparently it had been there for about 5 years. The Nuns who run the place gave me the bike for a $50 donation (good cause, right) and on the condition I take ALL the bikes!

So the bike is a World Sport. After doing a little research, I'm confused. The Serial # is supposed to be on the Bottom Bracket or the Dropout. Mine is on the dropout, but does not conform to the serial numbers that are listed online.

Mine is 342144

Any of you Schwinn experts know what I have? It's not really important, I'm just OCD that way .

Also, any suggestions on how to make it better? I'm planning on doing a complete tear down and re-paint.

TIA
Billy

HI not a bad looking bike. does it fit? I am no schwinn expert but I don't think it is anything special. the rear derailleur is not mounted correctly, the little bolt and anchor nut are missing.

What you have is a Schwinn World Sport built in Japan by Panasonic. The serial numbers you find on the web are only for the Chicago-built Schwinns. The world sport was introduced in '79 as an entry bike (just a step below the Varsity). Yours is probably a 1980 model based on color (frosty silver) and badging. At that point (1980) a World Tourist version was introduced and from that point on the World replaced the Collegiate as a model in the Schwinn lineup.

I think Panasonic made Schwinn bikes in Japan, not Paramount. Paramount was Schwinns flagship bike line in the past.

My '81 Schwinn World Sport says Taiwan on the headbadge, so probably it's probably a Giant-made frame. If your World Sport was made in Japan it should have a decal on the seat tube saying something like, "Schwinn Approved Made in Japan." The paint on my sample is pretty nice, actually; it's also considerably lighter since ditching the steel cranks and steel rims.

The other nice thing is that it doesn't have Schwinn's odd stem size of .833.
