I found a business card in the bottom bracket of my Legnano

I'm guessing that it must have been placed there as a rain shield. Check out the name. Is that cool or what?

There was one in the bottom bracket of my Gitane. It served no purpose other than to tell me the name of the shop that replaced the original BB.

Great shop, you should stop in. I think that Oscar is still there, at least he was a few years ago.

My '72 Frejus can be traced back there as well. From their site:

In 1910, Emil Wastyn opened a bicycle store in Chicago at a small location on Fullerton Ave. The foundation of the store was built on service, integrity, and tradition. He prided himself on his craftmanship and commitment to his customer. Did you know that Emil designed and built the original Paramount bicycle for Schwinn?

I found a piece of beer can in the BB of my 1972 PX10. I knew the bike shop mechanic and he enjoyed a good beer buzz during working hours. I never asked him to glue on my sewups.

I used to put rolled up aluminum can pieces in the BB for a muck shield, but a business card was for after-theft ID. I always wanted to see the amazed look on the faces of the Cops when I produced a card from the stolen bike with MY name on it...
but, it never happened...

Any idea how long it has been since "EV 4-8999" worked as a vaild phone number?

Google Streetview shows the card address as a run down discount appliance storefront now. If only the walls could talk.

A Wastyn card is a really cool find and I would put it right back in there. Business cards, cut-up beer cans, etc were all poular dust sheilds for frames without large BB cut-outs. I found a business card in the last Legnano I overhauled. It was for the father (an attorney) of the guy who originally owned the bike. He had installed it sometime in the early 60's and got a kick out of getting it back in the mail almost 50 years later.

Wastyn Cycles is still around, but a few blocks away, in the 2200 block of Fullerton Ave. Maybe others can comment on it, I've been by there but never stopped in, and it certainly does not look like a busy shop.

The previous owner informed me that he purchased the bike used from Oscar Wastyn's bike shop back in the late 70's.

I won't be putting the card back as I have already finished the bottom bracket overhaul.

EV 4-8999 translates to 384-8999 which is still the phone number of their shop.

"Drewing" is grinding pieces off vintage frames to make slick fixed or single speed bikes.

Some kid named Drew gets the blame.

Cool business card.

The poster wonders if Oscar Wastyn cycle shop is now engaging in converting old frames to the new style.
It doesn't apply to anything, he just said it.

The first time I repacked the bottom bracket in my bike I remember cutting a Fanta Grape Soda can as rain shield and putting it in there, circal 1976. It amused me quite a bit a decade later when I repacked it again.

Wastyn's shop is just a couple blocks from my house in Logan Square on the 2600 block of West Fullerton.

You might say Wastyn's is an old-school bike shop. Hipsters tend to hate on this place, just as Wastyn's customers might tend to hate on hipster-oriented Boulevard Bikes down the street.

You can read comments, pro and con, on the Wastyn Cycles page on chicagobikeshops.info. Personally I've gone in just to see some of the amazing Paramounts on display and to soak up some of the history.

If I lived in Chicago, I would be a lifelong customer just based on the negative comment left by one customer on the chicagobikeshops.info comment thread:

I've always wanted to try out fixed gear and when i said that to some old dude on the counter, he said "it was stupid and that if he was my father, he would take my bike away".....Im new to fixed gear and all and this is what i get from some old grandpa??? this store sucks, worst attitude ever

I wish I would have visited this shop on my last trip to Chicago. I will have to remember it for my next trip. I want to meet the "old grandpa" that told off that kid
