+1 To me, its all about pre-STI steel frame bikes. And it is still vintage even after you put STI on it (at least IMHO). So my 1987 Prologue, with 2003 Ultegra STI group, and modern wheelset, is still vintage.
I like to think of classic as more of a design/style. So I consider my 2003 Colnago Master Lite, with Columbus Gilco frame, chrome lugs and stays to be a classic. Its a combination of the steel lugged frame, and the use of chrome. Obvious (to me anyway) that it is not vintage as it is only seven years old.

Old enough to know how, young enough to want to.

I don't know how to define Classic and Vintage... But, I sure do love it when I see it, or better yet get to ride it.

Thanks for all of the insightful responses to my question, you guys are very thoughtful and perceptive. Sorry to bring up a subject that has been flogged to death before. So C&V sounds somewhat like the definition of pornography: nobody can pin down just what it is, but you know it when you see it. Well, there's nothing like bike-porn.
I like the pre-STI definition. The problem in my case is that I put Ergopower levers (and carbon forks) on my 30-year-old Kuwahara tandem. I guess that to be truly vintage, there must be some sort of restoration to original specs? Otherwise, it might just as well be a hot rod, reverting again to the car analogy.

When it comes to making changes I use the Hot Rod "restification" rule - change it as long as nobody can see it. So yes, the Ergo levers on your tandem would be questionable, the carbon fork is definately out. Then again it's Japanese so change whatever you like on that nice old bike
Really though, if I'm going to ride a bike regularly then it really can't be all original. All of the consumables will have to be changed (tires, tubes, cables and housings, brake pads, etc). And I'd probably want to change the gearing to something I can live with here in Colorado so the freewheel and possible the derailleurs might have to change. For example I use a Suntour 14-34 freewheel and a Campagnolo Rally derailleur on my Gran Turismo, neither of which were original. I don't think that changes its C&V status at all.

I still like...
Classic is a style...one can have a modern bike in a classic style (just ask Collin2424 about his latest acquisition).
Vintage is an age.
My Fuji Tiara...I would consider it classic but not vintage.
Assuming of course if you define classic as something arbitrary like pre-sti, presence of lugs, etc.

I think classic implies that it was the best of its type. I think there are CF bikes that are classic because they are the best, most desired, examples of their kind. Cervellos are classics to me and in 40 years...when all the kids who drooled over one but couldn't afford it start buying used...they'll be at the top of the heap.

I posted this in a different thread but I think it fits here, too.
To quote my favorite gearhead author, Peter Egan, a classic is "Something that nevers gets old, even when it is."
I like that.
