Good bye old friend
My ride was stolen yesterday, I misplaced my U-Lock so I just cabled it to my friends bike. When I got out of class 2 hours later, it was gone.
I rode it to school and work almost every day this year, and not being able to ride in this beautiful weather is really a terrible feeling. I invested a lot of my time and limited budget into the bike, and I'm going to miss everything about it. Everything from the simplex bar ends that shifted oh so buttery smooth to the annoying creak the bottom bracket made that I was planning on, but never got around to fixing.
Just wanted to vent a little, thanks for listening guys.

That was a big loss!
....and such a nice ride it was.
Just a thought.
Put an ad up pronto on your local CL. Get some reward $$$$$ involved if you are able.
No questions asked for the return.
Worked for me once.
Again, a sad day indeed.

Haha yeah, I've been watching craigslist like a hawk. My bike stands out pretty well on campus too, so hopefully me or one of my friends will see it around and be able to get it back.
Thanks for the support guys, C&V is the best.

Also go to pawn shops. sometimes they have video cameras and if you find your bike there and get a picture of who sold it, you can thank them in person if you ever see them.
I've thanked someone before, I leaned my road bike against a fence to go into a store but forgot my lock so I undid the front quick release... the best idea ever! the results are priceless!

I know U locks aren't perfect, but they should just quit selling cable locks all together as most of them are a joke. Problem with U locks is, they make your super light ride into a department store boat anchor, the instant you clamp one on it's holder on the bike plus it's been known that the general public turns a blind eye to theives smashing U locks or padlocks and chains in front of them in broad daylight.........Can we just make a steel bike frame into one big giant stun stick instead??? An occasional sparkling light show at the local bike rack with scumbag thieves as the dancing and shaking star can be exciting...specially at night!

Man that sucks, I really feel for you. I haven't had a bicycle stolen since I was a teenager but have had a couple of motorcycles stolen as an adult and it does just plain suck. The only person that is going to really care about finding it is you and maybe a handful of friends not the police so the only way you are going to find it is by searching high and low, posting ads showing what it looks like and telling everybody you meet what and where it happened and if you are lucky someone will talk and you might get it back in one piece. I hate thieves of any kind but bicycle and motorcycle thieves the most and if caught they should have their genitalia placed between the chain and sprocket to keep them from breeding anymore.

I know it may be hard but I would also check the CL's of major cities around yours. There have been many cases of bikes stolen in Toronto showing up on the Montreal or Ottawa CL's. I guess some people travel to another big city, steal a ton of bikes, take them to where they came from, and make a killing because nobody in their city has seen the stolen bike postings etc. Anyways, I wish you luck in finding your bike, it does have a very distinctive flare that should help others who are willing to help you.

Actually the best locking system is a small U lock that will go through the seat stays holding the rear wheel in place, this should be a key lock, and a heavy duty cable lock the thicker the cable the better, 1/2" or 13mm or better, that goes around some heavy fixed object, through the front wheel, through the frame and locks them together, this should be a resettable combination lock. Theft is time sensitive, if you have a pencil thick cable lock, a thief can cut the lock and be gone in seconds. A heavy duty cable lock will take much more time to cut, and having a lock of each type requires different tools, and doubles the time. Thieves are also opportunistic, if your bike is well locked and the one next to it isn't then guess which one will go missing.

Best yet if you can convince your professors in school to let you park your bike inside the classrooms during your class,
All my professors let us do this and it was not unusual to see up to six bikes parked along the walls of the lecture room aisles every day so we never had to worry about our bikes getting stolen. But you also have to consider that we were in the School of Architecure so my professors and dean were all very liberal about many things including having bicycles in the building. It also helped that everyone knew there were a lot of pro and amature racers in in the school.
BTW, this was in Wisconsin in the 80's. It's one of the most bicycle-friendly states in the country IMO.

Bikes: a heavy old steel Frankenbike Gitane, a cruiser (not something I'd buy for myself, but it was a gift, what can you do?), a Greg Lemond, a Specialized Stumpjumper(old, steel, fully rigid), and a Specialized Safire

I'll keep an eye out, I live in Sac. Also, check the Bike Kitchen at 19th and L st. And Bicycle Business on Freeport Blvd across from McClatchy. And flea markets. I have had friends recover stolen bikes at all three places.

The frame had a horrible crack in it that you couldn't see and was just about to fail. The poor bastard riding it will have tremendous medical bills and a new face.
