Don't be Too Proud, and Don't Ride Past a School!

The past two weeks I've been giving my 2001 CAAD 4 Cannondale a make over. I installed HandleBra leather bar wrap (https://www.handlebra.com/gallery), HUDZ hoods, and Vittoria Open Corsa Evo tires. The tires retail for $75 and I picked them up from Nashbar shipped for $25.

I was so proud of myself for coordinating all the colors. The bar wrap matched the blue Brooks Professional I bought over the winter. The tires and the HUDZ matched the yellow decals on the frame.

I finished up the project this afternoon with a nice frame waxing and prefect detailing before heading out on a ride. About 15 miles later I passed an elementary school, and about 100 yards further I flatted. Ran over a tack.

Moral of the story: Don't be too proud of your smoken hot new look--- and don't ride past those elementary schools.

I knew I should have tempered my enthusiasm before I headed out.

Tomorrow is Pentecost Sunday. The passage speaks about a mighty wind filling the room. In my case all I heard was a low hissing.

Being a pastor, of all people here, you should know the folly of pride...it is one of the Seven and considered perhaps the worse.

Even clergy succumb from time to time. I just needed a nice sharp poke in the Vittoria to get me back on track!

I'm not sure how impressed the elementary school kids were, but you got my appreciation.

Thanks! At the moment it looks a bit sad that it can't get up and gallop until I fix that flat.

It was Saturday evening. But there was a little league ball game in progress. Fortunately I was out of visual range by the time I dismounted and began my long walk to meet Mrs. PB.

PB I am PROUD to see you have used a triple crankset and large cog cassette on your road bike. I have recently aquired a a cherry cannondale series 3 that I am considering a similar drive train installation. A real nice ride by the way.

...or had intended us to ride aluminum frames, Reynolds 531 tubing would not have been created!

Just curious, can aluminum frames be fillet-brazed? I always thought they were welded, but wondered how the joints were smoothed. The tubing joints on Cannondales are, IMO, the only way they should look!

I'm middle aged, too heavy, and spend way too much time sitting. I need all the gearing I can get. Especially since I do live in the mountains.

Klein did joints similar to Cannondale, and though they came out extremely smooth, they Bondoed them anyway.

I was carrying! There just was not a great place to change the tube, the gnats and mosquitoes were swarming, and Mrs. PB was in the vicinity.

When they hiss I immediately take out my patch kit.

I the Cannondale joints are all metal I believe. There was a C-Dale frame on ebay a few weeks ago that had had the paint stripped and was then anodized black. The joint metal took the anodizing at a slightly different shade. It was almost transparent.

that was bad luck and had nothing to do with being proud about your work (which is incredible, btw).

And you probably know better, that there is pride (Pleasure or satisfaction taken in an achievement) and there is superbia/hubris. Pride is not a bad thing unless it turns into the other kind.

Enjoy your bike and be proud of your work

It wasn't on a bike, but one time I got a flat on my truck about a quarter mile away from a middle school. Of course, every little sociopath that walked by had to make a comment or laugh at me laying on my back trying to get the jack positioned and getting the spare tire out from under the bed.

Don't come to Miami, unless you want to be introduced to 5' long mosquitoes.

There was a section in a cycling magazine several years ago featuring the Cannonale factory. Edit: I remembered the info in the article all wrong. Googled it, it was published in Dirt Rag Magazine. Here's what they said about Cannondale's welds:

"And now a word about Cannondale's hallmark smooth weld bead. It's a common misconception that said weld bead requires sanding to achieve its smooth finish. In fact, the weld bead is smooth, right out of the weld booth. The smooth finish is created by a two-pass, puddle welding technique that Cannondale employs. Cannondale points out that their welding technique produces better penetration than welds that exhibit the typical "stack of dimes" appearance. Better penetration results in a stronger joint. Furthermore, the high and low spots on stack of dimes weld beads may act as stress risers—a potential compromise of weld durability.

The minor amount of sanding that the weld beads do receive is done to remove weld spatter and slight surface imperfections. As a matter of routine, the head tubes and bottom brackets are re-reamed to clean out their bore after welding."

E: Thanks for the compliment. In reality I know there is no connection between the thumbtack and my feeling of satisfaction when it all came together on Saturday. In fact, I had a good laugh as I was walking towards where Mrs. PB was going to meet me.

Kurt: It's not the size of the mosquito that counts. It's the bite. Or should I same the number of bites.

Rabid: Middle School behavior and humor is a mystery to me to this day. I have about 12 who are in my youth group. The funniest thing to watch is when attraction strikes--- and they barely have a clue as to what to do next.

well biked: Thanks for the info on the Cannondale process. I was nearly certain it was not fillet-brazed. But it looks nearly the same. So much better then the "stack of dimes." The next best thing to lugs.

I beginning to believe there is something about these new Vittoria tires and flatting on Saturdays.

Yesterday, I was with a buddy, and I flatted 8 miles into the ride. Two flats with the same tire, in two weeks, and both punctures were about two inches apart. I've been going years between flats, never weeks. What's up with that? Bummer!
