I take back any bad impressions I left of VO saddles

Referring to a thread about breaking in a new VO saddle. It was torture the first long ride I had, but after loosening the tension, removing the "apron strings" and putting another 300 miles on it; it feels pretty darn good. It doesn't feel as good as my Brooks, but I suspect it will get there. I really think they are "wound too tight" right out of the box and this one just gets more and more comfortable.

A leather saddle is not supposed to be soft.

All I know is I never felt that kind of pain breaking in a Brooks saddle.

I, literally, threw a Brooks B15 away once. And, a Brooks Pro, purchased new, proved to be a real pain in the butt for a good 400-500 miles. Other than that, I really like my Brooks saddles. I have also ridden Ideal, Wrights and AGDA. None of those remained on my bikes long.

Just one (of many) things about cycling I don't quite get....

I suppose it's like dating. You put up with a lot of discomfort, and when there's no chafing, things seem pretty good.

I've had a variety of Brooks saddles, all of them have been at least ok out of the box. IMO, the whole torturous break in period has been a bit overblown over many years in bike lore and I think there is a bit of a negative placebo effect going on. My wife never has had problems either. That is not to say that other people haven't, but again, I think this stuff is way overdone and I think these days Brooks stokes the flames a little bit because it adds a bit of mystique.
