I am 5'11" and looking at pikn up a Schwinn Super Sport. The owner says the frame checks in as a 54. I am jus using it as a single speed townie to cruise around town for fun. Is this the right size for my height?!? Any feedback would be helpful.

Also it looks to be somewhat vintage. It's the all blue paint pattern with schwinn in white. Any ideas on year. And lastly what'S a fair price to pay. It has already been converted to single speed.

Nate, the Super Sport changed significantly over the years, so without photos or components descriptions or a serial number, it's not possible to tell you what year it was made or how much it's worth.

Your leg length is more important than your overall height in determining what frame size would fit you. Also, the way the frame is measured makes a difference. Generally, the frame size is determined by the seat tube length, but manufacturers vary in the way they measure the seat tube length. Some measure the seat tube from the center of the crank to the center of the top tube. Others measure from the center of the crank to the tothe top of the top tube. Still others measure from the center of the crank to the top of the seat tube. Historically, Schwinn has used the measurement from the center of the crank to the top of the seat tube as the frame size.



For bikes with compact geometry (sloped top tubes), there are even more variations in the way frame sizes are measured and it often involves the intersection of a "virtual" horizontal top tube and the seat tube.

This chart will provide a good starting point for most people to determine the appropriate frame size of a bike with traditional horizontal top tube geometry. Note that at 5' 11", the frame size could be from 56cm to 60cm, depending on your leg length.

Nice, an '87. It looks larger than 54cm to me.

Looks more like a 58-60cm (and possibly larger) frame to me. It could fit, but it could also be too large.



$150 would be a fair price.

I have two Schwinn Traveler bikes; one is 21" (53.5cm), the other one a 25" (63.5com) frame. I am 5'10" and started commuting with the small bike last year about 3x a week. The commute is about 12 miles long. At the end of the summer I finally decided that 21" is a little too small. And my 25" bike is too large. Yes, I have to do something about this. I don't know your inseem, but I would say 54" is probably too small.

That to say, Schwinn bikes as far as I know are in inches, so 54" is unlikely.

Also as stated before the Super Sport you're interested in seems to be larger. In 1987 this bike came in 19, 21, 22, 23, 24 & 25 inches.

You can see from looking at the following pictures of my bikes that the Super Sport is probably a 23 (58.5cm).

Nice bike by the way. Columbus framing, so I would agree that $150 is a fair price.

Rarely do sellers get their bike sizes right. Go look at it and see how it fits. Bike is definitely NOT a 54 cm. But a 54cm would probably be too small for you anyway.
