Updating Derailleur on a Continental II

I have purchased a Schwinn Continental II with a "Schwinn Approved" derailleur that needs replacement. Can I use any new derailleur with this at all, or will it have to be a period appropriate? These have stem shifters, if that makes a difference.

Most any derailleur will work, even new ones. You will need a claw hanger to attach it though, most bike shops have them for around a dollar.

I used a cheap Suntour VX on my Schwinn Collegiate:

I second the choice of a 1970s SunTour derailleur, which is a vast improvement over the original Huret Allvit.

Edit: The Continental II might have had a Shimano derailleur -- someone will have to help me out on this question. SunTour would still be my first choice, but there are lots of older Shimanos out there which would work quite nicely, as well.

It came with a Shimano Approved GT 500. I've spied a similar GT-510 on ebay for 18 bucks that I'm probably going to pick up.

That GT derailleur looks ugly and lousy. SunTour wins, as usual.

Schwinn-Approved GT 500 is a long cage RD and that GT-510 will likely not be able to shift into the bigger cog nicely, because it is short cage.

If I were you, I would get one of these (brand new for $7.26+ shipping) and call it a day. It will work better than any entry level old used RD, but you would need to adjust it to go only 5 gears. The aesthetics are not there, but....

Hell yeah, thanks! That price fits right in the budget of this project. I'm actually moving along a lot better than I could have hoped: For a bike that hasn't been touched in years, the bearings are all still good (but dry; thankfully it hasn't been ridden), and nothing has been stuck that bad (save the races, but thats to be expected)

Yeah those Tourney derailleurs are on the ugly side but the price is good. The Shimano Soras look a little better if that matters to you at all.
