Chuck Schmidt in hospital

Chuck Schmidt of Velo Retro, Pasadena CA, was recently involved in a bicycle-automobile collision. Please refer to oldroads.com / vintage lighweights thread for more information. Although I have had the pleasure of meeting and cycling with Chuck only once (his 1937 Hetchins was the only bike significantly older than mine, even though this was a "vintage" ride), I have referred to his website and exchanged emails enough times over the years to consider him a valued friend. He is certainly one of the foremost experts on vintage road bicycles!

aw sh*t,
I've traded a few e-mails with him from time to time
and always enjoyed his posts to CR list. I haven't been reading
list for a while as I'm taking a class and really busy.

thanks for the info.

Marty

Chuck just posted a detailed statement of his condition on Oldroads.com / vintage lightweights. He is mending nicely and headed for what I think and hope will be an unenventful, thorough recovery. The high point of his hospital stay was that the paramedics uderestimated his age by 14 years (46 instead of 60) when they admitted him. I know his high level of aerobic fitness will speed his recovery.

Yes, cycling admittedly has its dangers, but do we really want to go through what former Pres. Clinton did this week, at the tender age of 57? I'll take my chances on the road, thank you.

I just received the following very encouraging email from Chuck Schmidt:

"Hi John , acutally I'm making a miraculous recovery. Thanks for your
kind thoughts!

Regards,
Chuck"

Chuck's positive attitude and high level of aerobic fitness are helping him through this ordeal.

I'm glad to hear he's doing well. I see him regularly at the Rose Bowl on his Waterford track bike. I was shocked to hear about his accident a month ago which happened very close to the Rose Bowl. No doubt he'll be back very soon.
