this is probably a REALLY stupid question but...

I've heard of people using 650a tires on 650b rims, especially on the (larger) Sun rims...Now, realizing that they're only slightly different, will they go the other way? As in: can I use a 650b Col de la Vie tire on my 26X1-3/8 Phillips 3 speed? It's got the original Endrick rims, and the 590 Bells I have on it now work OK, but I'd really like to try out the CdlV's without dropping the extra $10 per tire.

You can get a 700c tire on a 27 inch rim too. Can and should are two different things.

I'd be surprised if that worked: 584mm vs. 590mm. If the experience is like wrestling a Col de la vie on one of those oversized CR 18 650B rims, you don't want to go there.

Does anyone know the actual size (rim to rim) of the 650b Cr18's?

I've read on the inter web that 650D/587mm tires fit those rims well.

Good luck finding those! If I have to spring the extra cash, I will, but thinking that 3 mm in each direction isn't much to speak of at all, I thought it couldn't hurt to ask.

We have 3 650A/Sun wheel sets with a total of maybe 10000 miles on them. Each time there's a flat it's an absolute bear to get the tires on and off due to those over sized Sun rims. Had to purchase metal tire levers so they won't break.

If this is the scenario you'll have with 650B tires on your old 1 3/8 rims, don't bother.

Had I known the Sun issue before our bike tour I would have gotten 650B rims and used 650A tires.
