Helmets- Why or Why do Fixie and Harley Riders use their crainial.
Is it that they think it's cool to use a cycle skill cap or a bandanna for protection, which is stupid and costly to us. I live in Chicago, and low and behold here comes a fixie rider with a Campagnolo cap, no brakes on the bike and a Harley rider with a sleeveless shirt and a head band for protection. It's the cost of medical that is passed on to us who use the hard shell. To see a few busted skills split open make my ride a downer.

Helmets required here on the mc but lots of people that I ride with use "novelty" helmets that don't meet state requirements. My son-in-law finally relented and bought a full-face helmet.

Please, please, please - take helmet discussions to A&S.
If you want to know what can of worms you're opening, take a look at the A&S forum: https://www.bikeforums.net/forumdispl...acy-amp-Safety
Do you see that 9-page argument of bad blood and name calling near the top of Page 1? It only took 4 days for that thread to get where it is now (no place, unless you consider hate a form of progress), and it took less than an hour for it to turn into a nasty argument when it was first posted.
Please keep C&V as civil as possible.

Dunno the law here, but I do see motorcycle riders without helmets frequently, so I assume they are not required. You couldn't pay me enough to ride without proper headgear for the activity though. And in the case of motorcycles, full body leathers as well.

See that 9-page argument and name-calling fest nearly at the top of Page 1? It only took 4 days for that thread to get where it is now (no place), and it took less than an hour for it to turn into an argument when it was first posted.

Just hoping to catch the eye of anyone dropping into this thread, in the hopes that it will prevent responses (doubtful).
You know just as well as I do where all helmet discussions lead though.

Well it looks like you got it under control in here. Yes you do. Uh huh.
Want some ice cream? It'll give you brain freeze so you won't feel it when your head hits the asphalt.

There is a large motorcycle rally here this week. It's interesting to see the differences in clothing equipment on different types of bikes. The Harley guys wear $1000 worth of leather covering their entire bodies, but wear a handkerchief on their heads. The sportbike guys wear $600 helmets, but ride in shorts and T shirts.
I always wear a helmet on my motorcycle or bike, but would never insist that someone else does. That "we are paying for their care" statement just doesn't hold up. We pay for lots of care for people who make personal choices, no helmet injuries are far down on that list. JMO.

+1 I always wear a helmet, but I don't need the government to tell me to wear one. Ditto seat belts. If you are concerned with shouldering medical costs for other people's mistakes, start with drunk drivers. Lets see, that's almost half the fatalities on the road. Motorcyclists and bicyclists without helmets are way down the list.

as my brother once said about those guys who race their snowmobiles acoss the lake as the ice is going out, and now I think they do something similar with monster type trucks.

I wear a helmet for the other four souls in this photo:
Part and parcel of living in a free society is that you and others are free to make choices both wise and unwise. For me, not hearing a helmet is unwise. I don't expect that others will or should feel the same.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.
