Father's Day Porteur

A few weeks ago I picked up several bikes and frames from the widow of an acquaintance who passed last August. he was a tall fellow, like myself, and was afflicted with the illness that many of suffer from. His widow was determined to clear some space and I got the call. I ended up buying 5 bikes/frames including this Raleigh Competition GS. I recently purchased a VO porteur rack and had a set of 650b wheels hanging around, so I took a little time on Father's Day and built this thing. I used it to commute to work and made a couple of runs to the market with it, which is why I threw the Wald basket on her. It's been very fun to ride.

Outstanding! Are those plastic fenders? That's a really nice frame, and I would want to use something light.

Awesome! I did a 650B conversion to a Competition GS and was very pleased with it (though I ended up selling that frameset back to the guy I bought it from). How does it handle with that weight on the front end?

I remember that bike, Neal. I used it as a model for this build... thanks for the inspiration! I had quite a load on there last night and I thought it handled pretty well. This will be my primary commuter for the rest of the summer. The fenders are old Robin Hood 3spd fenders. I fashioned the stays out of number 9 wire.

This is a very attractive bicycle. Nice work. What gearing do you have there?

I think you need a bigger basket.

That is an excellent "going to the market" bicycle. I have an identical basket on the front of my Schwinn Racer.

Capacity is outstanding. Two grocery bags, or one large pumpkin, or about four to five six-packs of Mirror Pond Pale Ale.

The balance is tricky, but I am extra careful when I make the beer run.

That's brilliant! Much classier than my 'beer run' Raleigh, which I am sure is off-topic (but I can also bring a few bottles of wine for the mem'sahibs!

Your large frame has room for a taller basket than I can use on mine.

I actually started with a different stem, but had to put a technomic on it for better clearance on the basket. As far as the gearing goes, I think the front is a mid 40s and the large in the rear is a 34.

You better lock it up at the market, it'll get a look or two in the bike rack. Great style.
