Upgrade Path for a Grandis...

this is a shot of the finished Grandis given to me by a friend and mentioned in another thread. i only paid shipping and the cost of redoing bearings, cables, etc.

i have given some thought to upgrading the drive train. it is a Campy Victory set up from the late 80s- a 7 cog straight block Sachs Maillard freewheel, and Campy Victory front and rear derailleurs. i love the ride and handling of this bike-- utterly responsive, tight, yet smooth over rough pavement. just unbelievable.

but i've been out of the cycling game for over 20 years, and just now coming back. what would be an uprade path for this drivetrain? the frame is spaced now at 130mm at the back end...

By upgrade...do you mean a modern group, or a better vintage group?

For a modern group...I'd go either Sram Rival or Campy Athena...the silver.

thinkin' better vintage, KAS

nice looking bike as it is. I would go for an early Chorus or Athena RD and Retrofriction shifters. a shimano twist tooth freewheel may make shifting a bit smoother.

if you want it to 'click' I saw a Sprint shifter/deraileur set on ebay earlier.

If you're just getting back into riding, I would grease up the bearings and ride it 'as is'. If it isn't geared low enough for hills in your area, I would change the freewheel and chain at minimum and avoid spending too much money on changing things. Get riding, change later and you'll know better what you want to change after several hundred miles accumulated.

Great choice! Any of the Chorus groups with the monoplaner brakes would be great and look super, IMO. I have a panto Chorus group on my Bianchi with a ramped Shimano freewheel in the back and it shifts like butter.
