Like, "Oh wow" dude. . .

I posted a Trek 600 in Reynolds 531 for sale on CL, and then I got this note:

“It's a nice looking bike... Would you take $150 for it? I am looking to do a fixie conversion and I just can't justify paying that much more over the cost a similar condition Sprint/Fiji. (sic)”

It’s not his low-balling that amuses me – it’s his “in-your-face” rationale: Does he honestly expect me to care or empathize with the fact that he just can’t justify paying that much more for my Trek, than for some gas-pipe POC to fixify?

I’ve sold a lot of bikes on CL, but I’ve never encountered such an inane response from anyone. This guy could be a poster boy for “how NOT to win friends and influence enemies.”

PS- I blocked his e-mail address – my response otherwise would have been far too sardonic, but I just had to post something here to get it off my chest.
Thanks for letting me vent !

Yep, perhaps the best response is the one not made. I'd be tempted to invite the low-baller to shop for a bike he can justify.

yup. I'm not going to lie I've sent a few lowballish offers regarding bikes that had been up for sale for several months, that being said nothing nearly as ignorant as crow came across.

I was selling a bike for $275 and a low baller sent me an email offering $75 CASH!! I should have blocked him, as he sent me several followups waiting for my reply. I finally just sent him a "the bike is sold" message.

Rule #1 of Craigs List: Ignore all email offers. At best, my response is: "Come see it in person, see if it fits, see if you like it, then feel free to make an offer."

Auchen, rear brake cable appears to be a bit short, and you have a smudge on your camera lens.

Nice looking bike, otherwise.

I've gotten several low-ballers. Some of them sound almost threatening.
If someone offers a lower but not absurd price during the first day or two I'll politely answer that I'll wait a couple days first. Sometimes I'll let them know that one or more persons are interested at full price. More than once the person has rushed to my place and bought the bike at asking price.

I have recommended Walmart to a couple of characters that told me they could buy a new bike for what I was asking. I told them to go for it.

Just the other day I had a young girl and her boyfriend at the house looking at a Raliegh USA and a Trek 800. The Raleigh was needing a bit of work and the Trek was nice but nothing special. I told them I could have sold the separately for $250 (i'm thinking 100 for the Raleigh and 150 for the Trek)but since they wanted both I would cut them a deal for $180... very reasonable I thought

The girl says " I'd like to give you $140" I'm like "jeez"

"No I really would have to be at $180"

"But I'll give you cash right now!"

" Well being I would only take cash anyway it will be $180 in cash "

"Well We'll have to pass cause that's all we got"

" Suit yerself"

And they left muttering something.

About an hour later the boyfriend came back all nicey and made the deal. The girl no so much.

I sold a track bike a few months ago and gots lots and lots of hilarious offers but this exchange stood out:

Him: "Awesome!! Is it still available? How my km's approx on it? Mechanically is it gd ona scale 1 to 10? Just curious, and it looks like a single speed, am I right? Lemme know, cheers."

Me: "Hi, it is a track bike so it is a fixed gear ride with no brakes.
There are about 1000kms on it and mechanically, it is a 10, there are
zero problems with anything on the bike."

Him: "Ok,,, well would you take a Mens Citizen Eco Drive watch,,, MSRP$825. And 400 cash. I can send u pics of watch,,, its MINT COND, really nice.!"

I've embarked on a new strategy. If I want to sell for $175, I list for $250. It's already worked once before

You're 100% correct.
I'm not so experienced in routing for these newer style Aero levers: And it really looked OK until I finished wrapping the bars: Then I realized that my temporary tape was allowing more sag in the housing than what the Bike ribbon allows. (That effectively shortened the housing.) I didn't feel like unwrapping the bars at that point though.

-Next time I'll know to wrap the bars with the real thing FIRST - and then do the final trim on the housing at the calipers. (You don't have to think about that when you are routing for normal levers.)

- And I was wondering what was up with my camera... It's a big smudge alright - but it gives the pictures sort of a soft, warm glow, don't you think?

I recall in college some guys used the approach of propositioning every female they encountered, the theory being that an occasional yes would occur justifying the more typical abuse. Perhaps some lowballers (no pun intended) have the same strategy.

I am sure that mini fridge was awesome. Can't imagine why you wouldn't trade your own mother for that!

Soft glow?
Yes, at first i thought you had a soft focus filter on or something, then I looked at your other pictures and other ad, definitely big, greasy mitts on the lens.

How have you found responses and selling prices so far?

I have dropped my prices considerably compared to prior years, and am doing 'okay'. My biggest problem is I have too many nicer bikes this year. I guess I'm going to have to head to the back of the garage and start some of the basket case Schwinn's here before too long. Only a couple of weeks before the grad students return.

That sounds familiar - I've had people come without the money more and then decide they seriously want it and the next thing you know, I'm standing there explaining why I can't accept checks or giving them directions to the nearest ATM machine.

You are aware that a check made to 'cash' in MI that bounces will get the State police and ATF guys on the track? Same as counterfeiting in MI, at least.

I will take checks from some UofM students, someone in law school doesn't want a lousy $300 screwing up their career.

I've directed probably a dozen people to the ATM and have done iphone-iphone paypal transactions twice now. I liked that very much I felt like I was in the future...
Also, I've taken a digital camera and a Trek 1000 both + cash in trades before....never been offered a fridge though.

btw- Nice looking bike and not a bad price, probably wouldn't last 30 minutes in Boston at that price tuned up and good to go like that. I assume the Detroit prices are significantly lower though. Good luck with the sale.

This selling season seems considerably slower than last year - I have not dropped my prices at all and it's taking longer for people to come out see what I have. I've also had a lot of "no-shows". (That gets kind of annoying).
-Once they do arrive though, I have done well - selling at or within $20 of my asking price (though on this particular bike I have some wiggle room.)

I have been trying to stick with mid-grade road bikes only, and avoiding low end stuff. I think the low end stuff flips pretty fast, but on most, I find myself replacing the FW, Chain, Cables, Housings, tires and bar tape and so they net almost no money to buy more consumables, to start the process again.

I realize it's a felony to pass a bad check, but it was done to me long ago and could ill afford it. I haven't forgotten the lesson. BTW - The person I took it from claimed to be a Law student - false ID and the whole gig. (Not UofM though- another place far away)

Treks with Reynolds tubing are in demand here in Detroit - (as they are everywhere I think) - but EVERYTHING is slow here now. - These are hard times and that may have something to do with it.
Schwinn, Raleigh, Trekand Fuji (or is it "Fiji"?) seem to be the names people know. Anything else needs to be "explained".
