Questions about my new old huffy sportsman

I bought this huffy sportsman (rear hub is dated '63) and I have a few questions about it. I've never had a bicycle like this. I've included some photos for everybody's enjoyment.

The transmission works well and I can hit all three gears, it sounds good, etc. but sometimes, while shifting, the pedals will totally slip from gearing for an instant. Is this normal? How would I fix it if it's not?

It has a rear rack with a piece in back that hinges up from the rack and is on a spring. What is this for? See the first photo.

And finally, I'd like to get side baskets for the rear rack. Are any available that will attach onto the existing rack? I want to keep this rack because it's original to the bike and is a paint match.

Very nice bike. It was made for Huffy by Raleigh. See Sheldon Brown.

As far as your questions, does the bike slip between 2 and 3? There is a neutral spot between the two, so usually you need to let up on the pedals when you shift until it falls into gear. Oil the hub, and make sure the shift cable is adjusted correctly.

The hinge on your rack is to hold down items you are carrying, such as a windbreaker, baseball glove, or pizza box (all things I've done).

I don't know if you can get red baskets, but Wald baskets take paint well. They come in chrome and black, but you could find a paint match to your bike at an auto parts store and paint them to match.

The twist-grip shifter is notorious for hitting the freewheeling spot between 2nd and 3rd, you can replace it with a trigger shifter and the dead spot will be much less noticeable. Great looking Sportsman!
