I just bought an ebay mystery frame.... Gitane?

I just bought an ebay mystery frame, kind of on accident since I didn't figure I would actually win. I was attracted to that fastback seat cluster and interesting BB. The seller listed it as a Gitane with Reynolds tubing, Can anyone confirm or deny that? It looks pretty nice, and it only cost $38.00 with a paypal coupon code.

It looks 80s to me, which makes me think I am clear of the French incompatibility issues. Fingers crossed.

Pretty excited about this one.... It's a rare bargain for me and my size too. I REALLY wanted the Melton that he was selling but missed out on it. That's ok, this frame had details that I liked better than the Melton and supposedly an ok paint job.

I have bought from this seller a handful of times and the parts are generally well used. I don't expect this to be a museum piece.

Well-used it might be, but it sounds as if it might have quite an interesting history.

No decals left on that frame and as you noted, it might be pretty used bruised up in some areas, so why not go for a full re-paint and repalcement decals. If the bike is that special, I think it deserves as much. The pencil seat stays and the compact, fastback rear triangle's a very nice touch. The english threading's a godsend/bonus too!
Keep us posted on the progress of the Laurent Fignon spare/training bike Gitane build!

I would definitely consider that if any of the story is true.... but how would you ever really know. I think I will contact the seller and dig for more information and see where it leads.

I have to agree with sandman's ebay comments that it's not a Gitane, but I still think you've made a nice buy.

Fignon turns 50 on August 12, so now would be a good time to send him a card... though he probably won't remember the bike all that clearly.

looks like a really nice frame, and comes with a great story (which could even be true!) but I also think "Mr. GitaneUSA" is correct that perhaps this is a privately-built item that was badged as a Gitane. Fantastic price whatever it is!

It looks like I will have to wait to see it in person to get more details. I think every one is correct that it is not a Gitane, I couldn't find a fast back like that in the catalogs. I read that Fignon was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, I wonder if he is still fighting it?

Looks like one of the many forms of Tange Levin.

I had a tiny morsel of regret after I discovered I won, mostly because I have my DL-1 to work on. Now I am getting more and more excited about it and really am in no hurry to put it together. I have some Dura-Ace parts I would like to hang on it, the rest will likely be a major hodge-podge of unexciting parts. I do have a 7 speed exage group I could use.... if the parts fit I am actually leaning towards doing it. This one might take years to materialize but I am ok with that.
