Vintage New Balance MTB shoes?

I recently got these at a thrift store, I first picked them up because they looked like a decent pair of sneakers for someone with big feet like mine!

However, once I tried them on, it became apparent that the soles were stiff! Very stiff, such that normal walking was all but impossible.

Trek Bicycle Corporation?!? The plot thickens! They're too chunky to be road shoes, too stiff to be Triathlon shoes, or touring shoes for that matter.

The sole even looks like it's deliberately slotted to hold onto the edge of a clipped-and-strapped pedal!

So does anyone recognize these? Are they meant for mountain biking? Are they incredibly rare and sought-after?

They're early recreational mountain bike shoes for use with toe clips and straps. Rare? I guess they are now. Sought-after? Don't think so.

Did they have any more? My Avocets are just about worn out.

I had a pair of Nike's that were very similiar construction. All around biking shoe that you could walk in. Bought mine around 1990. I would guess yours are of the same vintage. I really liked them but they were'nt the most durable of shoes. Wore them out in about two years of low mileage riding.

This was the only pair I saw. Frankly, they're less comfortable than my MTB clipless shoes (which, though just as stiff, have a bit of a slope at the front to allow a more natural gait), so I don't expect I'll be wearing them much anyway.
