Anyone know what model Araya rim this is? These were installed new in 1983. There is an ink stamp number inside (310227) and the Araya decal (14x622), but no other stamping or impression. They measure from outside to outside 19.5mm and from inside to inside 14mm. For the past 27 years they have had Specialized Touring II (700x28c, front) and Specialized Turbo/S (700x25c, rear) with only 1 flat !!!
After I removed the rim belt, I saw that the original price tag was still there! I'll just leave it there.

Okay, 20 of those 27 years the bike has sat in storage, but for the first 7 years I only had 1 flat with those Specialized tires and that includes a 4 month tour of Europe!!! I'm now wanting to get this bike (Alex Singer) back in shape and it's going to need new tires. I've been out of the bike world for so long now and I could use some help in finding new tires. I don't think I'll be riding it that much, and when I do it will be on bike paths and not streets.
1. So, what I'm wondering, have rim designs changed enough that it will be not easy/or easy to find tires to correctly fit this rim?
2. What tires should I be looking at for the little riding I will be doing. And of course, I don't want to spend to much.

PS. thanks for the links to Araya rims, I still wasn't able to find a matching blue logo, it looks like they've gone through a lot of logo changes.

I love those. I have a beautiful pair laced to the inscrutable and equally fine Sunshine Pro Am hubs. The slimmest profile tire/rim combo I run. They float my Nishiki Superbe.

I always thought of them as the precusors to the 20A but they gotta have their own ID. Velobase gots nothing. We should post them.

20A you mean the dark anodized ones with the red/gold decal? great rims!

I think the Araya 20A came in both silver and dark hard anodized. That looks like a 20A, but the sticker's different. Nice double-eyelet rim in any case.

341213 is the number that shows on a NOS 20A rim I have. I wanted to replace some Italian rims on my son's OPUS III and bought 4 to get two. They just don't show up for sale that regularly, it seems. Anyway, mine are non-reinforced eyelets with that number. Maybe eyeletted ones are a different number.

$21.99 in early 80s = ~ $50 today. I paid $140 to get 4 a couple of years ago.

Short answer.......modern tires will fit. And are available in many variants. Size, construction, quality, etc. depend on the kind of performance you want. The rims are good to go modern, if they are in good health.

Yup. You'll be able to find tires to fit, easily.

Any modern 700C tire will fit and work fine on that rim. I wouldn't go wider than 700 X 32C since wider tires tend to push the rim walls outward, particularly once the rims wear down.
