Switching a 7 speed freewheel with a 5 speed

Hello all, I just bought a Trek 400 Elance bike with Sun Mistral wheels. I'v got a Trek 510 frame with a Wolber GTX wheel on it that Id like to put on the Elance. The Wolber wheel has a 7 speed freewheel on it and the Elance has a 5 speed cluster. Can I switch the freewheels on the two wheels? Ill probably bring it to a shop since I dont have the tool but just making sure it will work. If I did buy the tool is it hard to do? What tool would I buy?

Also how are the Sun Mistral wheels? They seem ok but the Wolber GTX feels a little smoother while riding.

Thanks!

Just swap the wheels complete with the freewheel. Five speed has different spacing than seven speed, but double check your spacing, as Trek may have put it on a 126mm hub. You must have the Trek 400 Elance triple. I would consider seven speed to be an upgrade, and would put it on myself.

The 510 never came with more than six speeds, and did not come with Wolber GTX rims. Most of them came with Helicomatic hubs, and those take Mallard cassettes, not freewheels, and are not compatible with anything else. I am guessing the former owner upgraded from the Helicomatic stuff.

Regardless of which wheel/rim is "best", you like the Wolber better. Your vote is all that counts.

It's not got half step gearing does it? Treks were sometimes funny that way. Not that it matters much for your motives. Do like wrk101 says, try the whole wheel on the bike and if you still want to mix and match freewheels and hubs, give it a try. Do both freewheels use the same puller? If that's the case, it would be worth your while to invest $5 in a puller. If not the LBS guy should be ablle to make the swap assuming there's enough space for the 7 speed cluster.

I have an 86 Elance 400T and I ditched the 5spd and put a 7spd freewheel on it w/out issue. It was spaced properly already

5 speed frames were 120, 7 - 126, so hub axles are different, but adding left side spacers to a 126
and taking off a bit from the right gets a stronger wheel, less dish.

I put the 7 speed wheel on the Elance and it is working very well. I didn't think it would because since the Elance was a 5 speed it had a spacing of 120mm right? The 7 speed wheel would have been 126 right?
