What model bike did James Coburn steal in "The Great Escape"?

I found a few mentions here of the movie, and some notes about it on other sites, but I was wondering if anyone ever figured out what model bike it was. Of course, maybe they all looked the same back then and you really couldn't tell.

I like odd bits of trivia and thought this might be an interesting one.

Since we're on the subject of unknown movie bicycles, how about the porteur owned by Burt Lancaster's character, Labiche, in The Train?

Great looking lock, looks like you just have to grab the lock and pull till the chain pulls apart on one of the link splits (:

Well, the fork crown could help. It looks lugless and has a spoon brake... that's all I got!

Oh no, Coburn's character has a little cutter that he uses to snap the chain.

Isn't he one of the few to actually escape?

Spoon brake, so they did a little due-diligence and got something period correct!

Great topic!

German roadsters were often fitted with rod spoon brakes as opposed to rod rim brakes.

Note the very '60s looking machine with the whitewalls in the background.

FYI, Durkopp's brake fitting is similar, but their fork crowns of the '30s are flat (chrome cap or otherwise):

Steve McQueen was riding a Triumph dressed up like a BMW. Don't remember any bicycles, or anything else from that flick.
