I wanted a B17, and there's a Univega attached to it...

Hey guys...just looking for you to tell me "no" on a potential purchase here.

I've been in the market for a B17 for quite some time and had been hoping to find one attached to a nice, inexpensive donor bike (dreaming, right?) Anyways, I was at Play It Again Sports of all places and there sat a Univega Gran Sport (low-end I believe but triple-butted chromo) fixified with a shiny new Brooks on it. All of the other POS bikes nearby are in the $200 range, so I figure there's no way this thing can be less than that price.

$155. With the 20% coupon I have, that's less than $125 out the door. Unfortunately, the frame size is not right for me, and I have no real need for a fixie in my life anyway. That said, I'd love to go over it with a fine-toothed comb, clean it up real good, and sell it as a commuter single-speed (it already has fenders). I figure I could get $150 for a nice Univega Fixie/SS commuter right? (With a parts-bin saddle of course).

God this is like an alcoholic asking a bar patron for sobriety tips...

EDIT: The picture turned out terribly with only the saddle in the shot...grr

If the seat is what you've been looking for (color, condition, etc.), I'd say go for it. Replace the seat on the Univega and post it on Craigslist for $100 or $125. In my neck of the woods a butted, lugged cromoly frame won't last a day at that price. That would be the cheapest way to get a B17.

Yea, what he said. Go get that thing before someone else does!
On a side note, inexpensive bike with enough value to get a free Brooks out of the deal is how I got my team pro. In fact I think I made money on the deal.

Simple economics say "buy that bike!" A nice cromo Univega should easily go for the same price you paid with a new seat.

I have bought several whole bikes to harvest one or two parts. It has always worked out OK for me.

You are in Corvallis at the start of the school year. Throw a generic saddle on there, adjust stuff so it's reasonably in tune, and sell it for what you paid for it.

Nice work, free Brooks.

Is it black? Just send me the Brooks and sell the rest of the bike

Its white, I'll be sure to bump the thread with pics.

Other than a few water splotches, the Brooks is completely unbroken in.

+1, I got my Brooks the same way, with a triple butted chromoly Univega attached. And the Univega was too big. I flipped it and kept the saddle. Net cost of the Brooks, $0. Go for it.
