Different downtube bosses and their compatability!

    Hey all!

Nowadays all bikes use what was once "Campagnolo-style" bosses for their shift levers. This was not always the case, however, and many companies had proprietary shift lever bosses.

Does anyone know more about this topic?

To be specific, I'm looking at a bike with "Shimano-style" downtube bosses. What's their compatability? The bike would probably get bar-end shifters instead, but then what's their compatability with cable stops?

Also, let's just talk about the subject in general, too. POST PICTURES OF YOUR DIFFERENT KINDS OF BOSSES EVERYONE! It'll be fun.

It's hard to see in this picture. This bike has the Shimano bosses and someone used a clamp on cable stop mounted in front of the bosses. Not really great looking.... but I suppose it works in a pinch. I would like to know more about the bosses too.... mainly which frames have them.

to the best of my knowledge only the shimano shifters from that time period will fit those bosses. asdie from some real cheap looking campi style brazeons (which I think were on a Simplex equipped bike) which still had the square base, the round shimano and square Campi are the only ones I recall seeing

aside from odd things like the Suntour that bolted on top of the tube and the super cool 'Escargo' brazeon on the top of the tube, but this was a basically a Campi style

    Shimano boss style:

    Friction only, accepts:
    105 Golden Arrow
600 Arabesque (easy to modify into generic Campagnoloesque units)
A few others of which escape me
    Right-hand Altus stem-shifter levers w/the mounting hardware from a 105 or 600 set
