New Keeper! Puch/Austro Daimler (ID needed), pics within!
Woohoo so as a few of you know from the threads I've been starting, I was looking for a fair weather bike to put fenders on. I didn't want to use a mountain bike or just some junker because well, I want it to be stylish and I want to be able to ride the heck out of it. I want to avoid riding my good good bikes in crappy conditions, as well as the sand/salt barrage of NE winters.
I came up with something to fit my criteria quite nicely. I'm not sure of the model name, but it's quite obviously an Austro-Daimler made by Puch with Suntour ARX derailleurs, Suntour Power Shifters, Maillard hubs (dated '83), Wienmann rims (36h f/r, 700c)/brakes, Sugino cranks (any idea of model?), and double butted 501 tubing. It's pretty awesome, and I intend to maintain it. Don't worry!
I do need to install my clipless pedals, and will probably change from the Avocet gel seat even though it's pretty comfy and lightweight. I have ordered VO polished fenders. Can't wait to install all the new goodies and get riding on it.
And what's that sleeping next to it? Oh, just my Cervelo.
You all owe BG for bullying me into taking pics! And thanks go to Rocket-Sauce for deleting the ad for this he posted in the CL/Ebay thread.

Ahh I can't afford another bike! I totally want the Lotus Eclair I posted in the appraisal forum, but I'm way too poor after buying this and putting a new clutch in my car.
It's less nice than my other two road bikes, at least...

Thanks.
A general question: change the FW or chainring on here for lower gearing? Trying to match my compact's climbing gear of 35 GI (34-25), and this has 42-26.
Doesn't look like a Helicomatic hub, but it is Maillard. 42 small chainring is ridiculous for me also. What BCD is this?
It's about a 20 rpm difference at crawling pace. Enough for me to want to change it.

I almost bit at that one too. And my name is also Alex...could get interesting/confusing to the seller if we go after the same bike! Fortunately (for both of us) I think I ride a size or two smaller than you.
Nice looking AD. Sometimes I regret selling my Vent Noir II earlier this year but it was too big and was the Gran Sport version (I am still lusting after the black DA version).

It's a mid level model, judging from the 501 tubing and the components I see. but as many AD bike are, it looks like a nice solid ride. It would be fun to mod it up with some upper level components. The classic details on the frame can easily take on even an NR grouppo, but maybe maybe you should start with changing the plump looking saddle......

Measuring BCD:
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_bo-z.html
This is a great table to refer to and a very easy formula.
Measure from the center of one bolt hole on the crankset, to the center of the the next consecutive bolt hole. Take this measurement in millimeters, and since your crank is five-bolt, multiply your measurement by 1.701. Depending on the accuracy of your measurement, you are now in the ball park of your BCD and can look on Sheldon's chart to find the closest one.
I'm wagering that your BCD is 130, which means the smallest chainring you can fit up front is 38tooth.

Crap...it's 144. Measured 84mm roughly. Looks like that idea is done for.
So what's the threading on my FW? I'm really hesitant to go get a bigger range FW because the jumps are going to be insane. We'll see once I start riding it I guess.

I think ron521 has the right idea. You may want to uglify it, too, so its elegance is hidden.

FW threading is most likely ISO-english, even it it is italian then they are still compatible. If it now has a 6-speed FW, you can go up to a 7-speed FW without sacrificing spacing between gears. Only limitiation to watch for will be the max gear size that the rear derailler will accept.
