Raleigh techinum 440
Ok...so today I bought this bike from a guy for 35 bucks. I am thinking its made in 1986, but I haven't seen the bike because my friend got it for me, he knows alot about bikes. But, I want to know is techinum the type of frame or the exact type of bike. From the picture in craigslist, which the kind already took down so I don't have the picture. But, I remember it having white handlebars and it seemed dark blue or black. So does anyone know the weight of it and what exact model it is?

86 Technium 440 was aqua-blue. It was the low level touring model, Sakae Ringyo hubs, Sakae Ringyo crankset, Dia Compe sidepulls, turkey levers, stem shifters, Suntour AR derailleurs, and Perfect frewheel. 460 was the mid model, 480 was the top race model. But the frame construction is shared among the 3. The epoxied down tube bosses for the shifters, or cable stops, differentiated them. They are all lighter than their all-steel counterparts. The three main tubes are aluminum and are glued to steel lugs. These lugs have chro-moly tubing brazed at the other end. Rear triangle, head tube, and fork are steel.

Technium is Raleigh USA's frame design. The 440 above is not an 86. Appears to be a later model with down tube shifters. A nice buy for $35.

I have had a couple of these bikes and never really liked them very much. Generally, I am not a fan of aluminum frames. But that is just me and not intended to be a reflection on the bicycle. Anyway, here is a picture or two of a Raleigh Techinum...

Hope this is a help.

The 440/460/480 line were sport-tour bikes, not purebreed racers. Used farily cheap/heavy components and 27" wheels/tires, nothitng olympian about them. I would estimate weight around 23-24lbs. The frame itself is fairly light and would make a decent bike if you were to replace all the heavy components. I had a 480 as my first "racing" bike when I was a teenager, slowly changed out most of the components for a mostly shimano 105 drivetrain and rebuilt the wheels with 700c rims. Fortunatly I soon crashed it hard and bent up the rear chainstay, moved on to a better bike.

From the parts and overall look, it looks like around a 1990, give or take a year. I dont think the 440 was built too much later than that.

Hi Kurt, thank you for that catalog. The 1986 techinum 440 does not match the one I have. So do you think it could be an 1987 or newer? Do you have a catalog for that or some picture to verify this?? Please help I really want to know.
