Schwinn Voyageur bottom bracket?
I have an older Schwinn Voyageur frame I picked up on Craigslist and I'm slowly building it up.
My question: On the bottom bracket (which I can't see any identifying marks on), the spindle looks like a regular square taper spindle - except that on the ends, there are threaded extensions. I haven't seen this before and don't know what to do with it. In particular, I'm puzzled as to how I'm supposed to put cranks on it!
Anyone have any ideas?

Some axles used nuts rather than bolts. You would see these on lower-end cranks. There's nothing wrong with this system, and I don't know why it only came on low end cranks.

As mentioned those are nuts. You don't need to do anything differently.
Probably so they could make the higher end cranks hollow and save a few grams.

As said, you just need the nuts with the proper "teeth". What year is your Voyageur? My '81 had this type spindle. My '87 has hollow axles.

I've had a few bikes like that and usually I want to replace the bottom bracket, which you might be doing anyway if it didn't come with a crankset. The crankset is what determines the width of the bottom bracket you need and it's likely not the same as the bottom bracket that is in there. A friend just tried to swap cranks on a couple of 80's Japanese 10-speeds and discovered that one crank arm was hitting the chainstay because the BB was far too narrow for that crank. Spend some time reading Sheldon's page on them!

It seems overwhelming at first but it's very useful if you read through it.

@ ColonelJLloyd - I don't know the year... the color scheme is dark gray with red lettering, if that helps. I'd like to know the exact year, so if you have any resources you can recommend please let me know.
@ reverborama - I haven't taken the BB out, so I don't know the current sizing. I also don't know exactly what cranks I have - I know they're Sugino and probably from the 80's-ish, but I picked them up out of a bike shop used/spare parts bin, so that's about all I know. Any tips?

Search for vintage Schwinn catalogues and click on the tfindley site. That will take you to pics of catalogues spanning over 40 years and WILL include the bike you have. Also, you can print out the page that shows your bike, suitable for framing.

No, but it will help with the "I'd like to know the exact year, so if you have any resources you can recommend please let me know." comment he made.

To boot, he's not even trying to choose a bottom bracket. He was inquiring about the proper spindle nuts and he was given the correct answer right away.

Thanks for the help all - I apologize for being slow to respond, I thought I fixed my settings to notify me immediately when anyone posted a reply but apparently that didn't happen.
roccobike/brockd15 - thanks for the tips on finding the exact year.

Alright... so I checked the headbadge, and it's a 1990. Looks like the one here: https://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1...ad_Cat_28.html (or rather, it used to look like that... certainly doesn't now).
