CCM Mistral

I just bought an old CCM Mistral on craigslist and I started fixing the little problems. As I was tightening the clamp on the old simplex front derailleur the plastic broke. I took the bike to two of the bike shops around my school (UCSD) but they didn't have a derailleur compatible...I am guessing because they don't have any for friction? Does anyone know of a newer front derailleur that I can use?

The plastic Simplex derailleur did you a favor by breaking up on you before you rode the bike as it must have been on it's last legs anyway with the plastic already breaking apart from age. look for later model simplex front derailleurs instead, specially the ones they paire with the very reliable and good performing SX610 series. and if the rear derailleur is also anolder plastic one that matched the front. get rid of it too and get the SX610 or better/newer model one instead.
eBay is a good source for better Simplex non-indexed derailleur.

No such thing as a front derailleur that ain't "friction", they all are, there is no difference. Maybe the guys at your shops just didnt know any better or were too lazy or both, or maybe they just didnt have anything with a 28.millimeter clamp.

It's the shifters that are indexed in most cases, not the derailleur. Positron excepted.

I'm running 10 speed DA shifters hooked up to a early 80s shimano 600 and it shifts fine.
