Meiko Road Bike
Anybody out there got any information on Meiko?
This appears to be from about the early to mid 70's,
and a Japanese product. Quite nicely put together from
Tange #2 tubes and outfitted with pretty early
Shimano mechanicals featuring a trident engraved
on most of it.
It is a very nice ride with some modern Continental
tires on the bottom.
The only company I can find by that name now makes
commercial dishwashers. Somebody who knows an
immense amount of arcane stuff in this area said that
he thought Meiko was mostly a Japanese domestic
bicycle company that made a lot of 3 speeds and never
actually got imported to the USA. I'm guessing some
Vietnam era serviceman's bringback ( along with the
obligatory Sansui megawatt stereo package).
Any thoughts?
Thanks for the replies. These are about the best photos
I can get given current technological status here at my
garage and my oldguy generational limitations. The serial
number, if such it is, is stamped quite clearly on the BB shell
and reads "MCD 4009". Again thanks for your assist and
suggestions. If any photo of a particular detail might help
further, please tell me and I'll provide it.

Welcome to C&V.
There is only one other mention of this marque on BF, and no images or mentions of one on Google. If you can supply some photos you are surely to get more thoughts offered up.
Also, if you can supply the serial number that might help those who know more regarding Japanese offerings.

The frame looks early 1980s based on the limited photos. Those trident engravings might actually be 1983-1986 Shimano 105.

Your photos are incredibly blurry. Enough so that I won't look at them because it makes my eyes hurt. The rear derailleur is Shimano Golden arrow. It's a 105 level derailleur that sort of has a cult following much like arabesque.
Work on using proper focus points in your photos and show any details about lugs that seem unusual. What you've shown so far looks like a generic 80's japanese bike.

Yes, that's first generation Shimano 105, a.k.a. Golden Arrow. The embossing is actually a bow and arrow, as opposed to a trident. I haven't seen that serial number format before, so it doesn't appear to have been contract manufactured by one of the major names. However, based on what I know about Asian formats, it should be either a 1983 or 1984 model, which fits perfectly with the components and my original estimate. Given the era, components and tubeset, it would have been a lower mid-range bicycle. Sorry, that's all I can supply.

How about more on that Paramount in the background? The Camera seems to want to focus on it

Bad lighting + shaky hands = blurry photos. Apologies, will
attempt to improve. Thanks for the Golden Arrow and generic
'83/'84 model information. This is probably about all I'll ever
find out about it, other than it's a pretty nice ride -- and what
more do you need really. Actually the frame geometry and
ride quality are similar to:
'84 Waterford Paramount - nicest bicycle I've ever owned.
Full top of the line Suntour mechanicals mostly. Really
much too good for me. Is this a great country or what?

Getting back to the original topic, the lugs, seat cluster, etc look just like my son's Bridgestone 450, so maybe it's a B'stone in disguise... Or maybe those teeny tiny lugs were pretty common. (Tho' I don't recall seeing them anywhere else.)
