This was obtained via a late snipe-bid on Ebay. I had just sold my 4.5 inch Krietler rollers on CL and they paid for this plus a little extra beer-money left over I'd been watching it carefully and quietly for a week; if there's one thing I've learned over the past couple of months on the Forum it's that you never show your hand when you're thinking of acquiring something CV on either Ebay or CL!

I've done some searching and haven't found much info on Dennis Sparrow. I did find a link to an old thread on the Forums, but again - not much there. The only things I know are that the fork steerer is rifled and there's a Columbus stamping on the steerer as well - an older stamping at that. The serial number is 79090 - I'm guessing the "79" is the year, what with the 1010B dropouts (they have buttressing on the driveside to allow for drilling/tapping Portacatena mounting holes). The only other ID on the frame is the engraving "PEERYMA702J7", whatever that means. British threads; typical American framebuilder standard. The frame is finished to a very high degree, with superbly filed/thinned lugs, clean and consistent shorelines, huge chainstays and the top tube brake cable guides are even offset at 11 o'clock to the left.

This will be my rollers bike for wintertime - it's already been treated somewhat harshly in it's lifetime - and when spring comes will be pressed into service as the crappy-weather, fast/flat training ride rig. All the parts are waiting to be bolted on save for the English NR BB cups - I have to score a pair of those. Anybody want to swap a pair for a NOS pair of French cups?

Enjoy the pics. I might do a thread on this to see if there's anyone out there with some lore on Dennis and his beautifully-built frames.

DD
This is an urgent request!

Please place this bike in a box and send it to my house at your earliest convenience.

Please!!!!!!!

....and Jet's Eddy Merckx looks might tasty as well.

It will be a hoot watching the pics go up on these two builds. Way to go fellas.

Yup, I just got it now thanks to a very helpful and outgoing forum member. It needs some work and a good scrubbing but I like it a lot already. The stem is super long so that will have to be switched out and the rear derailleuer cables are a bit off but I don't think there will be any major issues. I am still waiting on Merckx to get back to me with the serial number's authenticity, the bike was a team bike for Olaf Ludwig (apparently).

My winter project arrived yesterday.

The seller believes it to be the work of James Fothergill of Liverpool and dates to the 40's. It could be earlier.

The black paint is not original. A previous owner sanded through it apparently looking for old decals etc; you can see what he found. It is tempting to go ahead with repaint right away, but I think I should build it up and ride it before investing the effort.

Opinions, expert and otherwise, are most welcome!

well, I don't know how many will be done by winter's end what with all the other stuff I have going on, but:

'68 Carlton Flyer - i keep changing my mind, but probably period Campy with leather stuff and chrome stuff.

60/70 something PX-10 - probably a paint/powder job - 650b conversion

IGH beater commuter out of my Miyata 210.

then I have some minor changes to make to some other bikes in my fleet including converting my tourer to 9 speed bar end indexed with a front dynohub and light, changing my long haul touring recumbent to friction shifting bar end for the rear, and swapping out the crank on my Fuji Finest to a period correct Japanese compact if I can find one. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things. Does it make sense why I can't focus on one bike for too long? And I don't even have ADD. I have the opposite problem, if anything.

There's a mudguard eyelet on each fork blade and each seat stay. The right fork blade has a mount for a lamp bracket, and right seat stay has a corresponding eyelet or a tail light. That one took me a while to figure out! The double eyelet on the chain stay is for a derailleur.

I haven't forgotten it! The trick is to find an excuse to drive down your way... and since I keep telling my wife that it's against my religion to drive the car for my own personal reasons, this is getting trickier all the time. I continue to drive for family reasons, of course; so ingenuity is involved....

That's gotta be authentic - even has the race-number display boss underneath the top tube just aft of the headset. Nice score that'll be a real beauty when done!

Not C&V, but one of my winter projects that I decided to bump up the queue...

I need to get some dark red cable housing and a long (tandem) shifter cable to finish. A set of Ultegra 8-spd bar ends will go on the bars.

My winter projects:

Keith: Spend more time on the trainer than wrenching!

Opus IV:

- Build wheels.
- Build bike.

Here's what she looked like in the CL ad (mercifully not drewed):

Came to me as a frameset (PDXAero facilitated):

And after being cleaned but before touchup (in process):

America:

- Install NOS 44T proper chain ring.
- Install newly bought VO fenders.
- Swap tires of CST gumwall to Pasela 700x28 or 700x32 tires.
- Install VO Croissant bag.

Touring Series III:

- Fix fender line.
- Replace shock cords in panniers.

Mucked fender line:

With bag compliment (crappy cell pic in motel room at the Chicago C&V ride):

Tiara:

- Relace wheels with nice double butted SS spokes.

So how did the rust abatement turn out when we were done? Did you get some celeste paint and touch'er up? You did at least get primer on those spots right?

Looks like a good winter ahead Keith! I really like the fork on the Opus.

rust abatement went great, i got primer on promptly, and my celeste finally showed up. its not a great match, but it will get the job done. fortunately the large spots were all rather "hidden" it will be just about right. she wont ever be "too nice" to get muddy.
