    B4H-Thunder Bay - brrrrr!

I am very proud of the work that Bicycles for Humanity - Thunder Bay does. We recently completed a documentary on the efforts of B4H world wide. I though you folks might get a kick out of the lead in scenario. I am the good lookin guy who talks a lot.

We sent three loads of bikes, parts and containers to Africa in 2010, making us the leader in number of shipments made. So far, we have sent well over 3000 bikes, tons(literally) of components, tires, inner tubes, etc and seven shipping containers, most of which were turned into bicycle shops.

That's really cool. I wonder what else in addition to bicycles is sufficiently utilitarian, durable, transportable, and maintainable that would also make sense to be collected and recycled in a similar manner to needy folks around the world?

It's also worth noting, Thunder Bay is not that far from BFE in the grand scheme of things... It isn't a foregone conclusion that a little known smallish city in central Canada would be showing everyone else how it is done. I'm thinking it really is down to individual drive, dedication and leadership. Kudos to you and your associates, Randy!

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
    Margaret Mead
I strongly believe this statement and it is the philosophy that keeps me going in the projects that we come up with. Next on the block, a free pancake breakfast. We usually make about $1500.00 (through donations) once the breakfast dust settles.

Anyone can do what we do in Thunder Bay. If you set me up with a car, a girl friend and bank account, it would be my pleasure to come visit and show you how it is done;-)

I am kidding about the car and lady friend, of course. My point is that it is easy to set up a bike drive, put the bikes in a box and ship them. Anyone who wants to give the idea some thought should send me a private email. Our group will help guide you on a really - REALLY - fun project.

We have a local humanitarian effort too, though our drive is focused on Chernobyl, which is still suffering from the disaster of nearly 25 years ago. Our aid covers all aspects, though I've contributed lots of parts and labour for bicycles going to Chernobyl kids. The great thing about our effort is that we actually get to experience the difference our efforts are making, as every year the community brings kids over for the summer, to allow them to rebuild their immune system in a clean environment.

Great stuff T-Mar. We are the ones who can make a difference. The politicians and CEOs are just too busy making things worse. My, not so humble, opinion, of course.

    ^Damn right.

I volunteer at recycle cycles, we do some great work locally, and certainly can't keep up with the demand for our services in the summer. It's empowering for people to learn how to fix their own bikes and for someone that can't even afford a bus pass, we can hook them up with the mobility so they can get work and all that jazz.
