REALLY NICE old Mercier for $500:
This seems like a pretty good dea if anyone is interested. I'm sure the hubs on it alone are worth a lot.

Cool paint job though!
holy hype machine batman!
Olympic team bike for France, perhaps? Tour de France? Prototype? We're still searching; as yet we've been unable to find a solid answer. We've not found another Mercier with these decals - nor a person who knows about them. The Mercier company that built it is no longer in business, and the name was sold. For the details we have see sidebar. Call The DBC for more and we'll answer what we can.
While very nice to ride, this is truly a collectible... it's extremely rare... and draws a lot of attention. Similar models have sold in recent months for $1G and higher.
Stamped Dropouts, No finishing at all on the lugs, death stem...i'd be shocked if its not a low-end Gas Pipe model.

I love that vintage of Mercier, but even in exceptional condition, $200 at the very most.
Its a bike boom classic. Pretty paint jobs and graphics.

If you really like the foil decals (I do) look for a Jeunet 630 (or 640 or 650). Cool graphics and a full 531 frame.

Overpriced by $400, makes you wonder about the shop. Either they’re genuinely clueless or are being slightly deceptive by suggesting the bike is something other than a low-end boom bike.

I've got to have these guys sell some bikes for me. Wow!!

No one cares
Whoa. Banjo, you should know better than that.
Not a deal in the least. It's a cool bike, but not high end or worth anywhere near $500 IMO.
The sellers are either clueless or sneaky.

How they can call themselves professionals is beyond me. Either clueless or corrupt. Would you trust them to "handbuild" a bike for you? The whole bike boom has, unfortunately, resulted in a lot of fly by night start-ups that are in way over their heads.

Merciers are plentiful in Thunder Bay. I must have gone through a dozen or more in the past few years. Personally, I do not like the bicycle, feeling that the workmanship is about the poorest to come out of France. But that is just my opinion.
As for this rare old beast, I had one just like it. Well, most of one, anyway. For all I know it might still be in The Old Shed. If I find out it is, indeed, rare and worth a bunch, I will go see if I still have it. That said...
My guess is that there is nothing special about the bicycle although I am not an expert on Merciers. And the hubs look like Normandy high flange. Nothing special. Again, just an opinion.

I have to admit though, it IS cool looking.
- I like just about everything about it (except their price).
If it were really cheap and local, I wouldn't mind doing the work on it.

I sold a cappucino-brown one like this over the summer for $160. It is a nice-ish bike I guess, here's a pic

And worst of all, it doesn't even appear to be a model 300!

It's not a model 300, it's a 1971 model 100 - much lower end than the 300. I have one exactly like it in white and in far, far better condition that I'd be thrilled to sell to you for $500. (Or even $150.)
Definitely not a good deal, though I think the seat tube decal is pretty cool myself. Not $500 cool though.

My biggest pet peeve is the egregious use of "custom." Putting neon tires/deep Vs and Oury grips on a bike does not make it custom. But, a generation of kids who grew up riding crappy stock mountain bikes were apparently stunned to find that you can change components on a bike! Voila! "Custom!" "Hand built!"
