Wald fenders with VO hardware

So I went ahead and took the VO hammered fenders off and replaced them with chrome Wald fenders using VO hardware, I love it! The fit is sooooo much better than the VOs! and the installation was the same, very easy. Now when I look at the bike I'm happy. Pics to come, but again, crappy cell phone pics.

Can you compare the price you paid for the Wald vs VO fenders, as well as any observations regarding weight and/or finish? I've only seen the Wald fenders at my LBS, but they never really impressed me. Of course, the image and website of VO are slick enough to perhaps make me think their fenders are better quality than they actually are.

Agree with BPJimmy, though - they look good.

I bought a set of the WALD steel fenders last February from AE Bike: $25.49 w/ shipping though they're showing them about five bucks more expensive now:

https://aebike.com/product/wald-light...e0000-qc30.htm

They are model #89, which is supposed to work with 27" wheels (though they're labeled for 26"). I haven't put them on anything yet, but I like what you're showing, ILB.

$20.00 for the Walds with hardware, $55.00 (plus shipping) for the VOs with hardware, VOs are lighter but in a way that will only make a differance to a person that actually "tours" on their bike, the finish has stood up to the test of time for me as I've been using them for years. Maybe you havn't been impressed because they are built the way bicycle fenders have been built since day one, maybe thinner metal, but still well built. So true!

Purchasing the Honjo hardware separately is going to narrow the price difference considerably.

They look fantastic, but the front fender is far shorter than the VO fenders I have, and to me that's more important than alu vs steel.

ILBikes, those look great. You've done well. The VO hardware does look nicer than the Wald hardware, as i remember it. But, those fenders look very nice, especially considering the price, *and* that they were made in the States is just the icing on the cake. I'd known that wald made skinnier fenders, but i've only ever seen the fat cruiser-sized ones mounted. Might have to get some 952's for my tour bike...
thanks for posting the pics.

Yeah, bit it will still be a bit cheaper as your not paying the shipping cost, (Walds can be found locally) and it will still fit a whole lot better with a lot less work.
Clasher, I plan on adding mud flaps in the near future. ;0)

Yep, looks nice. I have the Voyageur's kid brother, and outfitted it with stainless steel fenders from an old 26" 5-speed clunker from the '70s. Just had to extend the stays a little bit. Stainless steel is great...doesn't "stain"! Made for a really easy clean-up. The fenders were literally the only thing worth salvaging off the other bike. BTW, that "color" goes with everything! Throw a rear rack on that bike! Maybe even a front rack while you're at it! Hey, it's a full-blown touring bike!!!

So, are these wider than the V-O's or something? What fit issue were you having that was fixed by moving to the Wald's?

My wife's V-O's fit her 27x1/4" Paselas quite nicely.

Nice. BTW, you could also buy a set of Berthoud fender hardware here:

https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/berthoudparts.asp

I think the stay attachment w/ the SS Berthoud fenders is better than the VO fenders. I had a set of VO stainless fenders and the the Berthouds SS are much higher quality.

If you know its gotta be junk why ask for comments? ;0) I'll answer your question anyways. =0) They (Walds struts and hardware) aren't junk, far from it, just that the hardware is made the way the 1950's (and earlier) style fenders were made, and thats to fit bolt on wheels, thats all.

haha, well, seems like i actually didn't "know" anything, but i seemed to recall there wasn't a lot of adjustability on the cruiser fender struts, for fine-tuning fender line. i've also seen wald headsets and stems, and they're kinda jenky. I mostly figured that, if the wald hardware/struts were any good, you would've used them on your schwinn, and left the VO goods to be sold with the VO fenders.

FWIW, i have mounted wald baskets with the axle-mount struts, but used the eyelet on the fork instead of the axle. This was on a very old fuji, which takes thicker bolts on the eyelets, but still. I guess the for-real question is, would it be very problematic to mount the wald fenders using the original hardware onto the eyelets of a bike with q/r hubs?Could you have used the wald struts/hardware, if you wanted?

-rob

ps-the struts/hardware on my wife's basket aren't junk, but they also aren't far from it. they're almost halfway junk.

LOL! ;0) The orig struts really don't have to much adjustability, but they fit just about perfect on all of my older bikes with bolt on 26 inch wheels. I think the problem comes in when you try to use them with newer 26/27 inch wheels/bikes with quick release wheels, thats why I decided to go with the VO hardware as the Voyageur has the correct mounts on the frame which made using the VO hardware a "no brainer." So to answer this question clearly yes, it would be very problematic to mount the wald fenders using the original hardware onto the eyelets of a bike with q/r hubs, not impossible, just problematic, and thats why I used the VO stuff.

thanks. I reckon i'll grab a set of 952's, for use with a 650b conversion with 38mm tires. Have a go with the stock hardware, and purchase something else if need-be.

I really do appreciate your input. Thanks for posting those pics.

My 2yo German Shepherd lays down to eat too, I have never had a dog that did that before (including my other Shepherds) and I find it pretty comical.

Oh yeah, this is bikeforums. Fenders look great!!!
