1976 Schwinn Varsity

A friend of mine purchased this in 8th grade with money he saved up from his paper route. I restored it for him this summer. These pics are pretty bad, but you get the idea.

Not too many old Varsity's get that level of TLC, Colonel.

I don't think it really has been resolved.

I think of gaspipe as straight gague cheap heavy tubing, the kind that you'd use to run natural gas into a house.

You don't run gas through concrete block foundations with butted tubing or chrome lugs...

I strongly feel that gaspipe should be reserved for bikes like the Free Spirit 3-speed I spuced up for my sister to ride around a very flat university campus.

We could look at it that way. I think of it as cheap and kind of rough. But there's a lot of 1020 framework out there that is pretty nice looking.

I can see it a lot of ways. But you and I agreeing is not enough for a consensus.

I surely am enjoying this thread! It's a great idea, and the alliterative title makes it more fun. Besides, I don't have any fancy framed vintage bikes that pass muster in the more rarified threads! It's nice to have a big home base thread like this!

It has already had its own thread, but the Jeunet beater also belongs in the Gaspipe Gallery.

I know this is an older post, but you did twine wrap over that old Schwinn vinyl tape? Anyone who rode those bikes back in the day knows that you start the wrap in the middle and work your way out to the ends, and the end caps hold the end of the tape in place. That is just so....not Varsity!

Anyway... a more recent pic of the DL-1.

My Maruishi Emperor qualifys I think. Its one of the fastest bikes(for me, anyway) that I own.

I know Ive posted this pic before, but its one of the only ones that i have. the frame is currently stripped down, waiting to see what its next incarnation will be. Its been everything from SS, FG, tourer, road bike, and wall art. Debating a flat bar with MBT gears for trailer duty or another three speed.

1971 Schwinn Sports Tourer I purchased new. It is still a great ride, outfitted with Schwinn's exclusive lead alloy components. I replaced the Campagnolo Gran Turismo rear derailleur with a Shimano Crane GS 'way back in 1974.

Italian gaspipe... replete with a bunch of heavy steel parts.

After a little weight loss... it is very much like a Peugeot UO8 in the ride and handling department.

I love those bikes. I have one in 60c, and the top tube is loooong, and then longer with that Nito stem.

What kind of tubing do those have? the ride is nice, good for a heavy guy climbing.

Trying to find another one, to restore to a more stock configuration. I have a bunch of suntour fuji branded stuff to put on it when I find it.

According to catalog, "best quality high tension steel tubing". This one was bone stock except for handlebar wrap/tires as far as I could tell, even had original straps/clips, pretty good condition leather Fujita saddle. Sold it to a college student after riding it around for a while. Very stable, solid ride.

shipwreck, where are you. A neighbor of mine has a 63cm S10-S of that vintage. I can ask if he wants to sell it. He uses it only indoors nowadays, if at all, since he's old and creaky. (He calls himself "oldfart" on our local forum.)

I live in northwest Arkansas. I thank you, but 63 is just a bit to big, Ive tried. And to be honest, if I bring home just one more bike, things may go badly for me.

I guess the solution to that is to bring home two!

My two gaspipe bikes:
1982 Motobecane Mirage Sport

Just needs a new front fender, bar tape, and a place to commute to. This has to be the nicest shifting bike I have ever ridden.

Raleigh Record fixed gear

I bought it missing the crankset and needing a new bottom bracket, this is it after I just did the necessary stuff to get it working with what I had. Future plans are rear brake, new bars and stem, road brake levers, and a crankset that isn't kludged together from a cheap biopace MTB crankset.

My 1975 Motobecane Mirage that I just picked up - it had been sitting in a garage for 35 years. 1020 tubing, made in France. It rides beautifully - I need a bit more practice!
