Suntour Barcon / Classic Bar End Shifters
Hello all - I'm am searching for some classic Suntour bar end shifters to use with my vintage schwinn super sport (or any compatable bar end shifters for this style). It has the original style deraileur set up. I would appreciate it if anyone has a pair or two they'd be willing to part with!! And i'm in the U.S too.
Thanks everyone!

Do a search for [suntour bar end] on a certain auction site. I see 4 pairs there now.

If this bike is from the 70's and has the original long cage Huret rear derailleur, I am not 100% sure that SunTour bar cons will work. That particular rear derailleur was hard to shift, even with the original Schwinn long handle steel stem/fork shifter assembly. I am wondering if it will work. Perhaps someone else can chime in, or PastorBob in NH would know.

I have several sets of Barcon shifters and I love the way they work. Most of my Suntour ones are missing one or both of the little lock nuts. Any nut will do, assuming it fits the thread, of course so the shifters can be put into working order in the blink of an eye. Send me a PM if interested in a slightly substandard set, cosmetically speaking.
Have a peek at these polished Suntours mounted on my Legnano.
If you are interested, you can have a look at how I fitted these guys to a set of non-drop handlebars. And they work great!

I've never had any experience with the long cage Huret Allvit. ^ I did the same as Randy did on my Schwinn Twinn Sport. My guess is the Suntour barcons would work on just about any 5-6 speed and maybe on a 7 speed. They probably don't have enough pull to go higher. But I've never tried.

+1, I've gone up to 7 speeds numerous times on Suntour barcons. I wasn't able to go 8 speeds - not enough pull.

Check out this parallel discussion:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ng-and-barcons
The shifters are capable of 8 and 9 speeds, but it'll ultimately depend on the rest of the components.

Also, I've heard that there were 5 speed & 7 speed Suntour barcons. Is this true?

I have a pair of the seven speed Suntour barcons. The right can be indexed or friction. Over the winter, I'm going to try them with a Shimano 7 speed UniGlide cassette. We'll see.

I have the seven speed Suntours indexing fine on a 7 speed Shimano HG but haven't used on a UG. I think they would work fine since the spacing should be about the same.

to OP: if you search for schwinn-branded suntour barcons, you may find them going for a bit cheaper than the actual suntours - I got mine for $25 shipped on that auction site. They're identical functionally, just one has suntour stamped on it.

Thanks for the info everyone! much appreciated.
it's a simplex rear derailleur, the pic is from when i picked it up from my old man's place, it has since been cleaned.
I now have a pair on the way, so we'll see..
thanks again.

question for you all - calif Eroica rules say "pre-1980 non indexed bar-end gear shifters".
do the suntour bar end shifters I have that are friction, obviously older, fit that description? they were on an early 80's Miyata 1000, did those shifters change from the 70's ---------- anyone know?

The only time I find the Duopar to be hard to shift is when its many pivot points need a little cleaning and oiling. It if it lubed, though, it is a dream. They are my absolute favorite friction derailleur.

Sometime in the 80s Suntour changed the Barcon design. It's pretty obvious though; the older ones all had the black rubber cover on the lever.

I have a set of older barcons and Accushift barcons, they both work flawlessly still, though with friction it's sorta tough for shifters to not work well.
The Accushifts are friction/indexed and I run them as friction.
Accushift barcons, at least mine, don't ratchet in friction mode. I would assume none do since they were made to index.

Death fork? Naaaah!!
FWIW the SunTour barcons were a factory option on the Super Sport in the '70s.
