Any Derosa Experts???

I picked this up at a tag sale cheap. I bought it for the frame only. My plan is to strip all the components off of it and deep six them since they are of little use, cold spring the rear to 130mm, strip off the decals and paint, then repaint and re-decal. Then I will re build it using a new modern era Campy groupe.

I was looking for some advice on a few things. First does anyone know the year and model of this bike??? There are no numbers at all under the bottom bracket. I am not sure if it is all original as I see the Mavic (French???) rims on an Italian bike. Is it a pretty common bike or does it have some rarity??? Don’t worry, this is not a “how much can I flip it for thread” I don’t care what it is worth, but I would like a heads up if I am about to hack up the Mona Lisa…..

My second question, are there decal sets available for this bike??? If so does someone know of a recommended source? So my first questions kind of reflects to my second question since searching out a decal set would be much easier if I new the vintage and model of the bike.

Thanks in advance and a Happy Holidays to all you!!!!

On the off-chance that you are not joking, here is a website that lists all the De Rosa currently for sale on eBay and Craigslist. Hopefully you can see the value of the bike that you have here and that will not continue with your plans to re-paint it.

https://bike.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/bike.c...=d&submit=+GO+

Of course, I have no idea what you paid but you can get at least $1000 for that bike in that condition, probably much more with the proper photos and presentation in a for sale ad.

Is it your size? It is a large framed bike intended for someone about 6'2 to 6'5 I would say...

on the off chance the OP is serious when he wants to deep six the parts I will pay to have then shipped to me for proper disposal.

the address is PO Box .... OH I better PM that

PS it is very common to see Mavic rims of a bike of that era.

WOW, did I say something wrong here??? The fact is that I did pick it up cheap, don't really know (or care) what it is worth and simply saw it as an opportunity to refinish an old steel bike. The original components ARE in rough shape and I want to ditch them for something newer.

My basic question still is regarding a decal set, is there anyone courteous enough to point me in the right direction, or tell me what year or model it is???

I see no need to be called a "troll" for asking a few simple questions. If some of you are actually so offended by the fact I want to repaint this bike then I apologize....... Geeeeeeezzzzz

I'll be glad to pay shipping to get those ratty components off your hands. Who would ever use Campy NR components these days. I have some equaly ratty old bikes that could use some beater parts. PM me if interested.

And the paint looks bad on your DeRosa. No harm in updating an old beater with a powder coat, hope you do it up in black.

Coda, you have 15 posts on a forum of very enthusiastic and passionate vintage collectors and cyclists. Your language is insensitive to begin with. What is "deep six"? anyway? bury 6 feet under? What kind of reaction do you expect when you tell a very serious group of vintage enthusiasts that the mint condition vintage parts we covet are of little use and you would like to dispose of them? To top it off there is no evidence of your bike requiring a repaint and you say you want to redecal it? Please explain your motivation, there is no obvious reason it should be repainted.

So here is your heads-up: A vintage de rosa is valuable and highly coveted. Such an important collector brand (like anything collectable) is more valuable in original condition. No one here wants to see your bike repainted. There is also no reason to cold set the frame since it is likely 126mm and you can pop in a 130 hub without much worry. Had you said you would save the parts in a box and put the new parts on it doing no irreversable damage you might be taken seriously.

actually I asked for the parts first.

I agree with cyclotoine, we don't know what you picked that bike up for but you could dust it off and waxit with minimal effort and resell it for a nice profit to fund something more to your liking. also that frame does look pretty tall so if you are not over 6' it may not be a good fit.

if you really have to repaint this a good reputable restoration shop like Joe Bell should be able to reproduce the decals when he paints it. again if you must paint it I highly suggest you send it to some one line Joe Bell or Spectrum and have it done right so if the time comes to sel it you will have less trouble proving that it is a DeRosa

I am interested in the wheels. Please pm me if you plan to sell them. I'll buy all the components if you're willing to part with them for a fair price.

I just realized you don't have enough posts to pm. daniel@front242.net

These components are in rough shape, look at the photos. If anyone is insulted that I would want to ditch them then you need to look at the bike in person. I plan on doing the paint myself, I restore cars as a hobby and I am confident in my abilities with a spray gun.

As far as frame size it fits me fine, I am over 6'-3" and need 62cm min. That is the main reason I grabbed it because most everything else I come across is way too small for me.

Again, I am really not interested in reselling it at a profit. I know that there are a lot of flippers here who will never understand that. That’s fine we all have different reasons for searching out old vintage rides. I am more of a "resto mod" guy myself.

If you don't like what I am about to do to this Derosa, you guys would really flip out if you saw what I did to an old Camaro.

Lets live in peace, after all it's Christmas. And once again can anyone tell me what year this bike might be??? Has anyone bought decal sets for this vintage or know where I could get them??? I see some on ebay, anybody have any luck there???

coda,

On the off chance that you are sincere, the worst thing you could do its take a late 70's/early 80's De Rosa and respray it. It's not a Camaro.

It wont ride any better resprayed, and will lose something that can not be replaced. The patina on an old bike is desired. At this time, the yearly production was in the hundreds, not 100 thousands, like a Camaro. This frame was most certainly made by Ugo himself.

I have not seen one post of yours in the 2+ years that wasn't a troll, so ....

Whatever.

It doesn't fit me, melt it for scrap, for all I care, makes mine more valuable.

I might go even farther - that is bike is by one of the best makers ever, and many of us would rather give you a decent but far less distinguished frame in addition to the price you paid, so we can have that bike and still allow you to have something you can practice on.

My own opinion is, if you just need to hack on that one, don't tell us about it. We're all serious fans and in some cases collectors of bikes like that, and hate to see one go off the market. You should understand what you have there. It's not just an old steel bike. It's one of the best ones ever.

It sounds like you would be just as happy with a rusty Schwinn Varsity. Someone here should be able to help you with that.

I doubt many people here are willing to help you learn what you want considering your plans. We're not all just mercenary about bikes.

the answer is yes, this is the Mona Lisa, now leave it be.

why do you want to repaint? to test your skills as a painter? there are obviously chips here and there but NOTHING even close to warrant a repaint, even if this were a cheaper/less collectible bike.

also, the components are far from being in bad shape.

That bike is a piece of cycling history and needs to be preserved. It is in great condition as it is and trust me a repaint is 100% unwarranted. The components are all very high end and once cleaned up wont be "ratty old parts" by ANY means. this is not the kind of bike you modify, their were very few produced unlike a camaro. I am all for modification and resoration on lesser bikes, but when you want to take a very fine example of one of the worlds finest bikes and mess it up, im sorry but your mental stability in regards to cycling (and maybe other fields) is in question. please dont proove your self to be an ignorant fool, dont do it

I agree. I think you would be surprised how well this bike would clean up with a complete disassembly, including all components. Degrease, reassemble and relube the components. The frame would respond well to cleaning, Scratch-X and wax. Only then would I look at it and make a decision on restoration or not. It looks like it would be great without it to me.

Joe! you should be more careful. I am sure there are members here who know where you live.

now you should see the cherry '57 Biscayne my cousin my cousin just picked up. he is considering make it an ElCamino flower car type vehilce. either that or he will put a lift with a '87 PU undercarraige on it.
