1985 Peugeot P6
 

Hello everyone. I'm pretty new around here. This is the first bike I have posted here (other than one with my friends in the alt bike area). I decided to pick up a cheap bike and fix it up a little bit as a Christmas gift for my younger brother. I found this old bike on craiglist for $30 and it had definitely seen better days. Somebody had put different wheels and a 6 speed freewheel on it at some point in time. So basically I just took it apart, painted it (his favorite color is orange), polished up all the dull metal bits, got some new tape and tires and put it all back together. I replaced all the cables and found some brake pads since somebody decided to remove them for some reason. I'm pretty sure it's an '85 P6 but I'm not expert so I could be wrong. I apologize for only having one before picture but I hope you all like it. It was an pretty low budget build as I'm sure you can see. (Luckily if you hate it you can be glad that I didn't give it to you for Christmas) On to the pictures:

Great freshening up job on the Puegeot! With the proper maintenance, the bike will go for many more years nd miles on the road!
Just try to get rid of the "safety" brake lever extensions as soon as you can/afford to. Not really a good "habit" to aquire for your younger brother, as they give a false sense of braking effectiveness/convenience. They dissapeared from bikes after the mid 80's for very good reasons.
The down tube cable stops for the shifters can give him an option to maybe go with "brifters" in the future if he wants to (have not used brifters myself, but you might need to work in cable adjusters on to the stops, I'm not 100% sure if it's needed on all brifter systems or possible to add on with those stops), but you can also install down tube clamped on shifters too as I had done on my PH10 in the 80's with clamped on Simplex retrofrictions. IIRC, the cables cleared the small brazed-on stops easily when the shifters are clamped above it. Eventually moving away from the stem shifters will also be good for your brother eventually, as it will be easier for him to shift. Stem shifter might only work better on non-drop bar bikes.
BTW, your bike has pretty much an identical frame to what my year or two earlier model PH10S had. Could it be a PH10 too and not a P6??
It's a good, sturdy and very nice riding frame.

You seem to be quite right Chombi. It seems to be a 1983 PH10S based on the shape of the drops, down tube graphics, bottle cage bolts, and the location of the sticker on the top of the seat tube vs top of the down tube. I appreciate your help in identifying the bike!

I've looked into it a little more and I have become unsure. The shape of the dropouts and additional graphics match the '83 PH10S and it was offered in black. It has Weinmann 500 side pull brakes It has Shimano RD-Z501 and FD-Z202 which are listed in the '85 catalog for the P6. The chainring seems to match up with the P6 picture as well. It has a Suntour 6 speed freewheel and Raleigh wheels so it's possible that the components could have been switched out. Was it common for there to be some variation from the catalogs in frame details and/or how they were equipped? Do you think the parts were added later? I'm curious.
