Any tips on bar wrapping in conjunction with barcons?

I am about to embark on a re-wrap of a set of bars set up with Campy bar end shifters. Unless I'm missing something, these shifters are tightened up in the bar ends by means of rotating them until tight and I'm concerned about either tearing or loosening the bar tape that is inserted into the bar end at the start of the wrap. Does anyone have a tip or trick for me here? I suppose that I could start the wrap up toward the stem and work down towards the bar end and tape it off just above the shifter, but I was hoping someone had a slick approach to dealing with the Campy shifters and the approach that they seem to require.... Thanks in advance

I'd just as soon retape it with the tape starting after the shifters. As far as I know you aren't usually supposed to put tape inside the bar end shifters...

I just start at the barend and tape towards the stem as normal. No need to tuck the wraps into the barend. Just overlap once flush with the barend and keep going.

For bar-ends I wrap from the top and bottom leaving the junction inside the brake levers. This requires mounting your brake lever clamp on the bars first. Just warp up and down to the clamp and tuck in or around depending on the type of levers. When the levers are mounted it should hold everything tight. No tape anywhere, nice and sano all around.

I usually tape my bikes this way - looks great. No crappy electrical tape, clean top and bottom. For some Mafac half hoods, I had to come up with something new. It was Brooks leather so I couldn't tuck it in the plugs at the bottom. I wrapped from the top (of course) and ended at the bottom, where I cut it off on the bottom where you couldn't see the end. I used a couple drops of latex (which is used to keep the base tape on tubular tires) to secure the bartape to itself, then used a toothpick to 'paint' a little more latex on the edge to secure the seam on the last turn around. It came ot looking really clean and tidy. Hasn't come undone yet.

If you tuck smoothly you can tuck two layers of cloth tape into the ends and still get the Barcons in. I've done it more than once.

With Shimano barcons I've always had to install the barcons before taping so that the cable housing could be fit properly into the barcon.

I used to have this conception also, but there should be a hex bolt inside the mechanism. You get the shifter inserted in the appropriate orientation and within a turn of being snug, and then then manipulate the shifter, insert the hex key, and snug it up that way.

orcas island, Some wrap the entire length of cable, some not at all and still others only wrap a few turns around the housing. When I first installed bar ends on my Raleigh the greatest majority were like my bar end's wrapping below.

I install the barcons, housings and cable first and the use filament tape to hold the housings in the correct place while I remove the cables and barcons. I tape the bars, tucking the tape into the ends and reinstall the barcons and then the cables. Sometimes I have to give the barcons a couple of taps with a soft hammer to get them in.

I've also been able to tuck VO elk hide covers with barcons, but there are a couple of more steps.

+1 exactly how I do it. With Suntours the housing overhangs the bar end a bit, so you'll need to notch the tape slightly.
